On the one hand I'm looking forwards to retirement, on the other hand happy I'm not quite there yet with the way the economy is and the prospect of the orangeman returning to Washington to really bu99er things up. Exercise done for today. Winter wheels cleaned and put away for the summer and the lawnmower serviced and ready to tackle the jungle that is hiding my garden. Went to a Budget seminar yesterday and the view of the financial wonks in the room was that the economy will be better if the man with unusal hair gets into the White House. It was a case of "I really don't want him there for all sorts of obvious reasons, but for my bank account I do".

Well they'd have to be sure their bank accounts wouldn't be affected by Putin rolling his tanks into a NATO country once Trump is installed again, because that is frankly what's at stake. Besides, I don't believe them. By every measure the US economy is is far stronger form under Biden than it was previously under Trump. Every single measure. Even Fox News admits it.

I was just about to write what Al has. Trump and NATO stand-off ralationship and GOP introverted view = emboldened Putin from what I've read.

It’s a beautiful morning here. Flask filled, biking gear in car, bikes on top of it, forest beckons. Did anyone ever have “I wish I’d spent more time at work” written on their gravestone? 😎

For the first time since I can't remember when, we are staying home this year for Easter. In the office today, the whole team is there. I joked we must be the least Christian team in the company, got a few laughs and a few gasps. I'm not worried I'll get a call from HR. We share a space with around 8 other teams, from those teams there is a total of four people in. I don't begrudge anyone who is retired, I'm just doing my time, like anyone who has to work for a living, before I enjoy my freedom. I have to work so I may as well enjoy it.

I enjoy the challenge of my job in a technical and academic way. I don't enjoy the business management and similar stuff that surrounds it.
The insistence of banks and lawyers that we constantly have to prove who we are and that we are not money laundering is a complete pain and is no doubt the reason why some people just give up and retire.
But the enjoyment is managing to overcome the downsides... Just

I enjoy my job too, but corporate life can be fickle and things can change quite quickly. More concerningly, I think I would be bored here if I wasn’t working. Need to retire and sell the house to go exploring pastures new!

I guess it’s important to have other interests to fill the days. Fortunately we’ve always been quite busy doing other things when we weren’t working and share enjoyment of similar or the same things. So often I see couples who have nothing much in common other than being cohabitants of the same address and parents of the same children without having anything else they jointly hold an interest in. That might be a trickier scenario when the kids have left and both parties are retired.

Need to retire and sell the house to go exploring pastures new! I guess that’s why so many go down the campervan/canal boat/caravan route when they have the time and opportunity. We’re dealing with an awful situation re my wife’s father at the moment (unlikely to be a long term situation) but once things settle down we are ready to adopt a tent + no agenda except finding mountains to ride on scenario.

A lot of my friends are 5-10 years older than me and are retired or semi-retired. They fill their weeks on e-bikes and in campervans, which tbh doesn’t interest me much.
New Zealand is quite big, but doesn’t have many roads and you can see most of the country in quite a short time if you hit the road. Lots of campervans for sale again after a couple of years’ use! And of course it’s quite an expensive hobby too.

I could have progressed further and earned a lot more money if I wanted to. It would have involved taken on more 'management' type responsibilities rather than enjoying being technical and solving problems. Nearly every project over the last 15+ years would end up with me involved in things that my job title/role didn't include. Last project I became the export on MySQL clusters and tried to hand the knowledge over to the support teams but despite trying hard.... they never found the time. And also another project starting up wanted to know the same plus about a Zabbix cluster (using Linux HA)..... again they dithered and after a few months I was gone. And the last few weeks I was 'free/available' to do internal training.
Which is a reason I left... the inability of others to properly manage. Or understand technical things. And yet they were in senior positions requiring high level knowledge.
