How does it get around the speed limit thing where others do not?

Something to do with weight I think.

Ok. I'd be very tempted to go for it in your shoes. Wouldn't even cross my radar, but for your purposes, and if a long test drive proved satisfactory, then why not?

Something to do with weight I think. There are a number of criteria for qualifying as a "dual purpose" vehicle. The critical one viz a viz speed limits is an unladen weight of no greater than the metric equivalent of 2 imperial tons. It's a historic anomaly similar to that for motorcaravans (except in that case the criterion is the metric equivalent of 3 imperial tons). The definition of "unladen" is rather woolly, but as it doesn't include fuel, tools or anyone on board, it is generally less than any quoted kerb weight (so if the kerb weight is less than the criterion, there should be no argument). The kerb weight on the higher spec versions of the Navarra exceeds the criterion, which means the unladen weight might also do. Care will be needed on spec (or underwiting of the unladen weight) if you don't want to be subject to lower speed limits.

Still quite tempted just to buy the Merc. I reckon I could run it for a year and still come out ahead. I know the car, I know it hasn't hit anything, it has a full MB service history and that it has been driven with a degree of mechanical sympathy. It's a risk of course, but I'm not totally risk averse. It wouldn't kill me financially if there were some unforeseen costs, they would just be more of a disappointment than a disaster.

It wouldn't kill me financially if there were some unforeseen costs, they would just be more of a disappointment than a disaster. You can mentally add £2000 for non-routine repairs and get a worst-case cost of ownership of £200 a month. As for Vić's other prophesies of doom, driving a diesel into a city will become expensive before it becomes illegal, so you will have something with which to work on the boss for a change of methodology. (What you do seems insane to most of us already. 😳 ) Then you can keep the diesel for long trips — or gradually phase them out too as fossil fuel and roads become more expensive to use. It’s not deluded to think that diesel cars will be unusable in a few years. But it is to imagine petrol cars will be far behind them.

The stupid head says "get the pickup" The risky blinded by its flashy looks head says "get the pug"
The sensible head says "buy the merc really very cheaply, run it for two years, and pat your wallet smugly to make up for the slug like dynamics and "two short" problem.

Well well, who did that bear follow to get here? Funnily enough, I passed the Hoffmeister [sic] café in Prague this week and thought, there’s a name you don’t see any more. Goes to show, dunnit?

Doesn’t matter as long as we don’t have to see him in Speedos. 🙈
