Now don't laugh or scoff...but...having today inched my low slung, chin spoilered, low profile tyred LEC up a mile and a half of rough track to reach the bottom of a MTB trail, I parked next to a bloke with a new Duster. It had scrabbled up the same track no bother. Anyway, we got to chatting, and it turns out he has just recently had it as a replacement for an Audi A6 Avant.
Now whether he's just trying to justify it to himself, or was too proud to say otherwise, he was adamant that he loves it. He was quick to say that it's clearly not as luxurious as his old car, nor indeed as quick, but he said that there was something honest about it that he just adores. Cheaper than chips too. Absolutely top spec with all the toys at less than £19K.
Does make me wonder...
People like those little new Jimnys too for much the same reasons, although one of those would definitely be too small for me.
Ok, scoff and laugh now !

A Jimny Choo special edition would be just the ticket for you.

You are of course both almost certainly right. 😉

Although, re the justifying thing, I tooled around in a Mk1 Fiat Panda for a couple of years when I lived and worked in London. And it took me to the Alps twice on skiing trips. Never once felt inclined to try to justify it to anyone in truth. Loved that little car. The 525i saloon that replaced it was kind of better though, I'll freely admit. Except when it came to getting a Christmas tree in it.

Just to round this off ( for now anyway ) decision made.
I'm going to take the sound advice given by a few, but in particular Avant. I'm going to stick with my current car and arrangement for now. I have agonised about it, but ultimately, while I need to do 36,000 miles a year I'd rather do it in a car I like, that is someone else's problem if it goes wrong.
It's a fixed and known cost that I can afford, and any benefits of other arrangements are relatively marginal. I'm not in a mood to do that sort of mileage in something less pleasing to me, and I can see that I will be facing much greater challenges in the near future that don't need the distraction of worrying about what car I have, or whether it will remain fit for purpose.
I do need to turn my attentions to "her" car soon though I think. It's nearly 12 years old and while it seems ok for now, it would be naive to imagine that it will last forever.
Separate thread soon to platform that discussion/argument !
Thanks for all the input. It really does help having a few other car nerds to bounce ideas off.

Glad to have helped. Let's all hope that it - and sales of what's in the back of it - all work out for the best given the challenges ahead.

Good decision Humph. For all the miles that you do with early starts and late finishes you don’t want to be worried about your car’s break even costs or it’s reliability. Much better to let the company (credit card) take the strain.
Besides, you possibly won’t want to run a Merc when you are retired and on a different budget. Best enjoy it now, at somebody else’s expense, before you join the ranks of Kia/Hyundai-driving pensioners 🤣

Nah - get a Stinger. Korean reliability, German performance, American economy

Actually, you know what, a customer of mine has a new RHD Mustang. I don't want to like it, but you know how it is...he even calls it Sally which is so naff, but I get it I'm afraid. 🤓

You won't be able to get in anything low.
Well, maybe you will, but not out.
