Yeah I had been looking forward to ploughing through snow in the FWD, skinny tyred, light Corolla on brand new all-seasons this winter. And then not a flake fell. Of course.

Dacia Jogger before you need the new tyres.

Makes some sense Al, without doubt.
Just canāt help feeling Iād find myself looking out of the window at it and not be able to help myself reflecting on how my life had come to thisā¦
Shallow? Trivial?
Of course, but yāknow?
Maybe you donāt.

Anyway, my local (walking distance) garage are too busy to do the tyre swap this afternoon, and I need the car every day for the next week or thereabouts, so I shall just kick it all into the long grass for now.
I quite enjoy inertial solutions to problems.

I understand what you're saying Humph, but I think I overcame those sort of thoughts some time ago. I don't measure my feelings of self worth or success through possessions. And I care precious little what others may think my possessions say about me. I value my family, friends, and my peace of mind, and that's pretty much it. The latter of those is a bit sketchy at the moment for one reason and another, but my only real aim in life is to set the kids up with as good a start as possible, and achieve that peace of mind. And that can't possibly be affected by whether there is a Merc or a Dacia on the drive. If I like the car and it does the required job, what's the difference?
Each to their own of course.

You are absolutely right, and Iām as extremely wrong.
Itās a very old prejudice/preference, call it what you will in me. Itās genuinely not about what others may or may not think, that really isnāt of the slightest concern to me and never has been. But, Iāve just always had a thing about Mercs. Iāve had several of them and they have all pleased me for reasons I canāt actually define. They just seem to float my boat in a way other cars canāt.
Iāve had other cars that were arguably as good, if not better but for some nebulous reason, I just feel very at one with the three pointed star.
I first started wanting one when I was about 4 years old.
No idea why.

The two things arenāt incompatible. Todayās MB products are very little like the rather austere, sit-up-straight, good-for-you things I grew up admiring, but they are comfortable and nice to travel in. And it doesnāt matter what anyone else thinks ā unless you have a black one with everything blacked out, in which case everyone will rightly think youāre an idiot.
But I canāt see a current MB product that would make a good successor to the one I have, and it wonāt bother me much to have a different badge on the drive.

You could ditch the fashion victim wheels Humph and put a set of 8x17 wheels all-round wearing 225/50x17.
You'll get tyres in that size in all season flavours.

Mine can take the same 18s all round as a winter option, so I expect Humphās has a similar downsize option. For UK winters, though, itās simply not worth it.

I suppose I mustard mitt that I feel a bit the same about Alfa Romeos. That's probably the only badge I'd get a bit fluttery about having on the drive. So OK. I get it.

The one person I know in the UK with a Merc that uses winter tyres, has indeed a completely different set of rims with tyres for the winter. Seems to make sense and seems an awful lot easier than actually changing the tyres - less stress on the tyres, one would have thought also. I don't know the sizes, though I do know the winter ones are considerably less low profile.

Iāve had other cars that were arguably as good, if not better but for some nebulous reason, I just feel very at one with the three pointed star. I first started wanting one when I was about 4 years old. No idea why. I don't care about what others think, but I care very much about how I feel, if that makes sense. I had little interest in cars as a child, and not much more as a teenager. I only learned about them and their workings s being the only way I could afford to keep some old wreck on the road. A million years ago I was dispatched from the office to get something, I no longer have any idea what. I was loaned a company car for the purpose by one of the salesman. It was a BMW, a new one. I was so impressed and in awe that I remember it to this day. I can remember rolling up to a roundabout really wishing that one day I could own something like this car with the badge in the middle of the steering wheel. Ironically looking back, I think it was the most basic of 316/318s, though it did have leather seats., but it impressed me. Mind you, at the time, I think I had a beaten up old Chrysler Alpine, bright orange at that. I think that was the beginning of my ambition, certainly I had none before that, and it was about 18 months later that a company voluntarily supplied me a brand new Vectra/Cavalier and about about a year later that it was replaced with 525td. "Chuffed" doesn't even get close. Other than friendly conversation and sharing, I have never had any interest in what others think of what I drive, certainly not from a value perspective, but there have been times in the past when I have cared very much what I think of it - usually driven by a combination of badge and newness, neither of which interest me one jot these days.

I think thatās what I mean too TC. I care about my car/s a bit too much probably, but I donāt care what anyone else thinks of them, if they even do that at all? I donāt think I care much about what anyone else has as long as it is being driven in a way that doesnāt unnerve me.
Some cars though, just cheer me up a bit either to drive or even just to look at. I know what you mean about Alfas Al. Iām unlikely to ever own one now, but Iām glad they exist.
Even āherā wee Jeep pleases me for no definable reasons, just been out in it now and it just feels sort of friendly to drive. Like a big Fiat Panda really.
The āoldā Qashqai had more or less no influence on me, it was just there, being mainly quite useful I guess, but no more interesting to me than the washing machine.
Money no object, Iād have (as one of my cars) a Merc AMG GT. Just because I could really. Oh and an old 190 SL of course.
Natch.

I looked into getting a smaller set of steelies for the winter but evidently my brake discs are too big or something. AMG trim innit guv. Preposterous really given itās the van engined one, but there it is.
