Think I've mentioned before Mercedes was always a car I aspired to. Hired one, an E220 saloon, for a long weekend unfortunately, Mrs bpg couldn't get the electric seat in a comfortable position. She has two locked vertebrae in her lower spine. That's how I ended up in a Volvo.
Humph, has back problems and finds Mercedes comfortable and Volvo not. Funny old things humans.
I liked the idea of the CLS though the world has moved on since then.
Not sure about new Volvos. Never sat in one. I hope the build is as good if not better than the cars built under Ford ownership. Very comfortable place to be when faced with several hundred miles to cover.

I like Volvos, my dad had a string of them and I’ve had a couple. But as you have remembered, I can’t seem to get properly comfortable in the more modern ones. But, as with my comments about Alfas, I’m glad they exist. Citroens too actually.

I wish I had three different cars. One for my daily work, one for long comfortable journeys and one to enjoy on days off, roof down, dog and espadrille beside and behind me...just don't ask who goes where.

It’s a pity about SAAB. Always liked them too.

Idly browsing Autotrader the other day (is it just me?) I happened to notice that early BMW one series convertibles are something of a snip… I don’t need one, and don’t think I want one, I’d rather have a Fiat 124 Spider, but those little BMWs are really quite cheap in the scheme of things…

Apparently not I’m afraid. I looked into getting a smaller set of steelies for the winter but evidently my brake discs are too big or something. AMG trim innit guv. Preposterous really given it’s the van engined one, but there it is. 18s will be an option for that engine though possibly not in the UK. My ST has dinner plate discs on the front and 19" wheels. This can drop to 18" for winter/all season tyres. Looking at the Borbet wheel site AMG for your car is only the fire breathing 43, 53 and 63 models. The 43 can be run on 8.5x19 wheels with 245/40x19 tyres all round. German's run their cars on the smallest steel wheels and narrowest tyres they can get away with in winter and that includes the cars with monster rear wheel drive huge wheel/tyre summer combinations.

No, I think you're wrong. I've had exactly this conversation. You're right in that the AMG trim discs are larger and need wheels to cope with them, but I think you're wrong that you can't get cheaper rims built for higher profile tyres.
Or I have remembered it all entirely wrongly. I shall ask my friend forthwith.

She likes it and it looks good. But we all browse Autotrader looking for interesting cars and going down rabbit holes...

Here’s a theory for you.
What does the person who would have bought a SAAB choose now?
I reckon it’s a Skoda. Bit left field, not the obvious choice but very much appreciated by those who have them it seems.

Bit left field, not the obvious choice but very much appreciated by those who have them it seems. It might take a few years to reach that status but its getting there. We need to factor in Tesla as well. Also the architects I know (didn't they always drive Saabs?) now drive Minis.

Apparently his Merc came with 19s and he was able to use cheaper 18s for the winter tyres and they did pass over the calipers and discs.

No, but there’s a good selection of 18s available. I bet your E has the same brakes as my CLS, so 18 will be the smallest size either can take. And, as BPG says, they’re the same, slimmer width front and rear. Speed rating is presumably limited by them being winter rubber in the first place, so the reduced width isn’t a factor there.
