"His" Toyota needed one new tyre a few weeks ago. So, I got a Continental to match the remaining three. The spare is an old but legal, Singalongamax Ditchfinder.
Of course the one that has picked up an irreparable puncture today is the pretty much brand new Conti. ( While I was driving it so I can't blame him )
Grrr. ðŸ˜

Last time I had Continentals I got an irreparable puncture, and Continental couldn't supply a replacement in the correct size. I didn't fancy the idea of different makes on the same axle so had to buy two new tyres. Fortunately two Kleber Quadraxers cost the same as one Continental. But I vowed never to buy Continental tyres again.

Well, it kind of needs ( 3mm left ) two fronts as well, so I’m thinking to just get 4 new tyres and keep the one remaining well shod Conti as a spare and bin the ditchfinder.
My local Indy who does all our personal car servicing and MOTs etc reckons he could get me 4 Hankooks without breaking the bank. He’s calling me back tomorrow with a quote.

I don’t have an Avant-sized grudge against Continental but I had been hoping to move the CLS to Michelin, simply because I’ve had only positive experiences with their tyres — although, of course, no experience at all of the Pilot Sport range that this car would need.
Anyway, it’s not happening. One of the back pair developed a slow pressure loss that turned out to be due to invisible damage on the inner edge — there’s a lot of a 285mm tyre that you can’t see without an inspection ramp. And the other rear tyre was still fine and fresh, being the one that the dealer replaced before I collected the car.
The Franco-German alliance has kept Europe stable for 70 years, but I wasn’t sure a miniature one would do the same for my car. Nor did I fancy throwing away a fit £220 tyre for the sake of symmetry. So on went a new Sport Contact Something. And it’s fine. But it’s the first tyre I’ve bought since 2005 without Monsieur Bibendum.

I'm still yet to feel any difference between the Continentals my Merc used to have and the Ovations it's got on now. Set of 4: £200. Still alive, no ditches found.

Thing is, all I hear on here is Continental this, Michelin that. Are their wet grip ratings etc significantly better than rivals at half the price? Not so far as I can tell. Buy on rating, not brand. Branding is the biggest confidence trick known to man, and with tyres it seems to be the most immovable one (also Apple phones of course). 30+ years on mostly budget tyres, and no fatalities, no ditches (except the time my MG Metro spilled its fuel over the tyres and road, and I don't think even magic Michelins would have helped there). And that's down to not tailgating, and driving within my and the car's capabilities, and to the conditions. Tyres are pretty much an irrelevance, so long as they're in good condition, and mine always are. I replace before they're illegal, and keep pressures correct, even adjusting them depending on the car's load. Weekly checks get done on both my vehicles. Someone on Michelins who doesn't do this is at a significantly bigger risk of coming unstuck, I'd say. I was looking at an 18 reg Merc SUV thing in my daughter's school car park this morning. Continental tyres, front ones bald as billiard balls. My Leaf with 4 brand new budgets on it (£160 for the set). Tell me who's safer?

This bald tyre SUV nonsense was witnessed by me last winter on a very snowy day, when an AMG ML55 was in the tyre shop I was at with totally bald rear tyres. Given the driver was obviously using a 'burner' phone his bona fides as an upstanding member of the community must be in question.
Having said that, I bought £95 a corner Falkens to replace Continentals. They were very good initially, but after 12 months I am less convinced by them, in terms of noise, wet grip and wear. I might end up back with Contis or Michelins next winter. That will be under 20,000 miles for a set. Not very good I fear.

I only got 20k out of the Contis on my E. I was distinctly unimpressed by them. Not worth the extra in my book.

1) What is a "burner" phone? I don't think even the TV shows know. Does it just mean a PAYG phone? Because there's a bloody lot of them around.
2) How was it obvious what type of phone contract the driver had?

Good questions..
He was using a cheap £10 Nokia which was totally out of character for a youngish (early 30s) man driving an expensive car.
He had bling wheels on the car, but stupidly bald tyres.
The tyre place knew him (referred to him by his first name) but commented that he changed his number each time he came in and they usually had to contact him via Facebook Messages.
I may not be Sherlock Holmes but one can tell someone who is not 100% 'legit' if you spend as much time as I do in peoples homes and places of business.

I did fancy Cross Climates but they were £180 each. I do wonder about Primacy 4s and whether they might be the best compromise next time around. Anyway, what will summer arriving early, I don't think wet grip is much of an issue at the moment...

Oh I don't doubt your judgement of him, it is simply the term "burner phone" which gets quite a long way up my nose. People use it without having the first idea what they are saying or what they mean.
On television it annoys me as much as CSI/NCIS photo and video enhancement scenes.

I agree. If we had that technology we would be living under Big Brother..
