Strikes me that both parties will just muddle along in to the new year until such time that some kind of face-saving “deal” can be announced. Didn’t Canada’s trade talks with the EU take years to conclude?!

I just love that in this morning's Telegraph there is a letter moaning about the requirement that you will only be able to spend 90 days in each European country, and blaming the Government! How about thinking about this when the vote took place.

...and we know which way the letter-writer voted, do we?

I suspect I'm in the minority of Telegraph readers who voted Remain....
If he was a Remainer - why not blame the Brexiteers? If he was a Brexiteer - why do you expect to be able to remain in a foreign country for more than 90 days without a special visa?

Because the Tory press promised its readers that they could have everything they enjoy today, plus sovereignty, fish, no more brown people, and a Spitfire on every drive. ‘Cake and eat it’, remember? Now, who said that?

Exactly the same benefits, I think that was the phrase deployed. By a government minister, never mind the Tory press.

Now, who said that? Then they are going to burst with pride or blood pressure at the Hong Kong visa agreement:
FT are reporting 200,000

So, the new new new deadline to reach an agreement is Sunday I understand? The EU seem keen for this not to drag on in to the new year...

Why is the 31st December 2020 deadline different to all the other deadlines that have come and gone and nothing has happened/changed ?
Prices go up 1st January 2021 by average 10%, so what ? I suspect price hikes and more specifically tax hikes to pay back borrowing from 2020 will outstrip that rate, the question is will WTO tariff amount be added pre or post local taxation rate amounts ?
If people want an Armani suit or Gucci handbag or foreign made car they will pay whatever it costs or do without or borrow until they can get what they want.

Why is the 31st December 2020 deadline different to all the other deadlines that have come and gone and nothing has happened/changed ? Because that's the end of the transition period and the date at which our single market and customs union "membership" expires and we revert to third country status by automatic operation of law. Goods and services will then be dealt with at our border with the EU in the same way as any coming from other third countries without trade deals, such as Mauritania and North Korea. The impact is of course great because of the volume of trade which crosses the border, which is suddenly subject to full customs and import/exports regulations and checks. Something is about to happen/change on that date. Something very, very big.

The alternative might be an emergency extension to the transition period, which the EU would reluctantly cope with but Johnson would have a hard time selling to the Expressigraph.

Doesn't mean the transition period cannot be extended at the 11th hour if the politicians want to. March 2019 for Britain leaving came and went. October 2019 came and went Britain finally left on 31st Jan. 2020
31st Dec. 2020 can come and go while the transition date is extended, kicked down the road for another 6 months if the powers that be see fit. They've done it before.

Of course, both sides could act "illegally" and pretend nothing has happened with some political weasel words........ ...I don't think this Government would countenance doing anything in contravention of international law, though - do you?
