Imagine that later today, a bloke will be sending off forms for probate. Lets say bloke wanted to treat himself to a new mota in 6 months time. Bloke has a basic idea of what he wants - Estate
- Auto
- Toys
- Luxury
- Class
Bloke knows running costs wont be an issue, and while bloke will have an eye watering budget available, he will limit himself to £40k, new or pre owned/demonstrator. Where does bloke turn? Bloke turns to autotrader. He inputs £30k min, £40k max, 10k mile max, Auto, Estate, He gets 638 hits, Audi (205) BMW (239) Ford (14) Hyundai (7) Infiniti (1) Jaguar (1) Jeep (2) Kia (3) Land Rover (5) Lexus (19) Mercedes-Benz (328) MINI (3) Mitsubishi (8) Peugeot (9) SEAT (6) SKODA (15) Subaru (7) Toyota (1) Vauxhall (1) Volkswagen (34) Volvo (123)
So what is bloke going to do? (bloke is aware that new 5 series touring will debut soon)

Well, that's pretty much the brief for my co cars. And you know what I chose, and I'm very happy with it. Amusing little video on HJ at the mo ref the new E class (saloon) by the way.
All above said, any of the premium estates will be very nice indeed.

Assuming said bloke hasn't made a boo-boo on his probate form and Mr Taxman isn't actually going to take that 40k in a surprise retrogressive move, surely the list can edited thus, as a start?
Audi (205) BMW (239) Infiniti (1) Jaguar (1) Jeep (2) Lexus (19) Mercedes-Benz (328) Mitsubishi (8) Subaru (7) Toyota (1) Volvo (123)
And perhaps add an "out-there" Tesla.

Said bloke should take his time and have a lot of fun choosing. Was recently in a senior colleague's shiny new Audi A6 estate which seemed very impressive, nice ride, quiet, huge boot area but I guess most stuff in this range will be equally impressive. Enjoy the choosing process

This bloke gets annoyed that when he's searching autotrader for estates, advertisers label SUVs as such. See: Infiniti appearing in your search. There is no Infiniti estate. As per Lexus.
You'll buy a Merc. Go for a petrol one.
There are MINIs priced between 30 and 40k. FFS.

Said bloke should take his time and have a lot of fun choosing. hypothetically the choosing is probably going to be the best part.

Of course some hypothetical choices have already been made and the list would hypothetically look like Audi A6 Estate BMW 5 series Estate Jaguar XF sportbrake ( Bloke will be checking out the F pace incase its worth busting the budget for, but suspect not) Mercedes-Benz E or C Volvo V90, XC70 (newer than bloke has now) Of course some of the choices are below the 30k minimum, which bloke says is not a problem. Bloke has phoned inland revenue apparently, and with unused IHT allowance from spouse Bloke is not looking at IHT to pay.

There was a Vauxhall in that first list. Can't believe you discarded it so soon.
If I and mine had shorter legs, I'd be looking for the best and bluest 530d Touring I could afford, with a nice pale leather interior, perhaps even with a bit of dark wood for contrast. Enough room for most, a more driver-centred environment than an E, and that superb gearbox behind a six-cylinder engine. It would need sports seats, though. Got to have somewhere to find the crumbs of cakes I haven't eaten.

Audi has one of those D(oesn't) S(hift) G(ears) auto boxes... Indeed it does. It also has 3YW and dont forget RCDM. So at the end of the day, It will be down to driveability, I suspect, hypothetically speaking, that the Audi wont stay in the list for long. It will get a test drive tho.

The Ford is a handsome beast for sure, but at the end of the day its a Ford Mondeo, and Vignale on a Ford is just a bit to close to "Van den Plas" on a Marina in my eyes. It will get a test tho. The real thing is *just* out of my budget.

I just see the Vignale badge as Ghia+. Wouldn't put me off. Badge schmadge. I'd quite like one. Cambelts/chains providing. ;-)
Do you think your hypothetical bloke will go petrol, given the running costs hypothesis?

Hypothetically, Choice of motive power will be based entirely on Smoothness, driveability, and noise (quality or lack thereof). Bloke tell me his Volvo 5 pot sounds absolutely kin gorgeous when the boilers are warm and he signals full speed ahead on the telegraph and a noise he would never tire of. He does sauy however that when cold it sounds like a dump truck full of scrap metal and can be heard from several counties away. Bloke likes the sound that 6 cylinder AMGs make, but apparently is not prepared to put up with the harsh ride and squealing brakes that go with it.
