Tried Vić's hold trick today in my 2008-09 E. Doesn't work. Hold with the selector in any of the 'active' positions - R, N, D - keeps the brake lights on. Moving to P with hold engaged extinguishes the lights - but also releases the hold.

I've found the hold function. No idea if it keeps the lights on; I must check.

It does, or at at least it does on the "modern" ones...😎

Or just back it up to a reasonably reflectively surface, a painted garage door maybe, and check it with the reversing camera. Oh wait, does your car actually have....no?
Pity...😉

I worked out that my brake lights were going out in N when the face of the driver in the queue behind me returned to its (presumably) normal colour from boiled lobster red This thread got me wondering about mine. Start/stop cuts in on braking to a standstill (subject to certain conditions), and the vehicle can be held in that state by the foot brake, but the lights remain on. I know that engaging the EPB and releasing the foot brake restarts the engine, which is annoying. Having re- read TFM, it appears you should be able to slip the transmission into P, and then release the foot brake without the engine starting. Back into D with foot on the brake and engine should restart. I'm away in London for the moment, and haven't had chance to try.

If I put the EPB on my car stays off when I take my foot off the brake pedal. It can be restarted with the parking brake still on by pressing the brake pedal twice. Or press the accelerator which will also release the EPB.

It's all quite hard this isn't it? Stop, start, lights on, lights off, handbrake on, handbrake off, neutral or park...sod it, if you don't like looking at my brake lights then, erm, don't look at them, or do, I don't care, you're behind me.😎

The Lancer was designed with a similar configuration, but the gently flickering wicks was more of a comforting glow.

What really annoys me about all this is that in 2009 Ford built an S-Max with an EPB - mine! It worked perfectly for at least six years. In that time, every time I stopped at lights I flicked the switch and took my foot of the footbrake with the car remaining in gear (automatic). The car stayed where it was without the brakes lights staying on. When I wanted to move off, I simply prodded the accelerator and the car moved, disengaging the EPB at the same time. A perfect system......

" don't look at them, or do, I don't care, you're behind me.😎 considerate little sausage, aren't we Oh indeed so, in fact, if I thought it was a problem I'd, um, consider it... ( ba doom tish ) Other people's brake lights don't bother me as it happens, not sure what all the fuss is about. If they did bother me I just wouldn't look directly at them, but they don't, so I don't worry about it. Sometimes I suspect there are those who spend their days subconsciously or otherwise, looking for things to be upset about, and others who take a whole lot more provocation.😉

The BMW 220i Gran whatsit I borrowed did everything Esp describes, but smoothly stopped and restarted the engine too. Ho-hum car but a brilliantly implemented system.
