Ah. We were going the other way. We'd been down to the river at Mapledurham, then got further into Caversham than we'd intended (than anyone ever intends) and found ourselves heading out on the main road. The little tag on our trace was a pause in the pub car park so Boy A could, erm, use the woodland facilities.

Yeah, yeah. Sure. Presume the Mill was open for you to get to the river? Or did you just get as close as poss? Always struck me as a massive shame that there isn't a public footpath/cycle route across the weir there. I like to take the path from there to Whitchurch Hill, done that a couple of times on the bike. Once I crossed the river at Pangbourne and cycled back along the Thames Path on the Berkshire bank, but blimey, that's some hill up from Purley to the A329, utter lung buster. I have to dismount and push. Real shame the Thames Path has to divert from the river bank on that stretch because of the railway line behind the Roebuck.

No, the Mill is closed but we admired it, and the goslings and the herons, through the railings. So far, I've only ventured across the river once - last weekend, when a minor navigational blip took me to Sonning, so I thought I might as well.

Got to Kidmore End and back yesterday. About 8 miles all in. Pretty lame but it's a start.
It'll be nice when the New Inn opens again, would be a good place to meet fellow cyclists for a pint...

A while back, someone ( Esp I think ) suggested a forum meet up when it's possible. Just to lob a thought in, how about finding an equidistant forest to potter round on bikes one day. Nothing too strenuous, but just a "guid day oot" sort of thing. Beer probably not possible if people are driving, but coffee/tea and other tuck would doable.
Might be fun?

Beer always going to be difficult for a meet, unless we commit to staying overnight, which probably adds too much complexity. So yes, that's not a bad idea. I reckon the Chilterns are pretty equidistant... ;-)

Indeed it might. Somewhere in the Cotswolds, perhaps, or the Vale of Evesham?

Let's research the options ( if T&E comes with his leccy bike he could bring a tow rope for those who may need it ! ) 😉

Haven't been for about 30 years but I want remember the Forest of Dean being quite pleasant. Or Cannock Chase maybe for a more northerly excursion.

Pretty much a home fixture for you, innit?

It's about an hour and a bit for me to Cannock, and it is nice. But I'm curious to know if the Forest of Dean is still good. I went on one of those company sponsored leadership thingies there. Logs, rafts, rivers, assault courses etc that were supposed to turn you into a good manager or not. Quite good fun as I remember, but it did involve some of us escaping over or under the wire to a pub on a regular basis. Symonds Yat or something. Canoes too as I recall.

I went to Symonds Yat on a school geography field trip, camping and everything. Have a good mate from the Forest of Dean, he comes in for ginger-levels of mickey taking for that on our rugby trips (Gloucester fan of course). Proper "The Hills Have Eyes" territory, that is. Duelling banjos, that sort of caper.

Maybe we could do a tour of Spaghetti Junction, that's pretty central to everyone. Some beaches under the fly overs, too. Bucolic.
