Went out on my junker yesterday evening. Must have struggled to do done about 2 miles, studiously avoiding inclines, which is tricky from my house. Going to do it again today. #proud

Yay! Well done.
Just pump your tyres up really hard for on road. 40psi or so.

Well to be honest I used to be addicted when I was a teenager. It was my main pastime, and I cycled quite a distance every Saturday to tennis club in the mornings, and my supermarket job in the afternoons. About 20 miles all in every Saturday, then I'd also go leisure riding round the country lanes on Sundays and evenings. Not forgetting the rural paper round before that, which was about 4/5 miles every morning. Then I passed my driving test, got a car, I got out of the habit even more when I left home, and discovered beer, women, kebabs and lying around in bed until 3pm.
I see the attraction, I enjoy the activity. But of course I have a busy/tiring work/family life, and don't have much time to pursue my own interests.

Croissants and coffee in the garden early, 5 miles on foot cross country and round a lake with the dog after breakfast, 12 miles on the bikes late morning, sunbathing in the garden now and a barbecue planned later.
This country would be just great if only we could arrange to keep the heating turned up...

Just had 3,000 litres of heating oil delivered this morning which has taken the tank back up to around 3/4 full. Sending that up the chimney will help you out Humph - if you can wait a couple of years.

22km on the Portobello before dinner tipped my total for May over 400. Hoping to get the blue bike serviced this week; a couple of minor irks need fixing and the rear tyre is fast running out of rubber.

Made it over the county boundary at the weekend. Discovered a little rough trail between Dysons Wood and Chalkhouse Green which I never knew was there. Idyllic.
I'm not sure my BSO is as bad as all that after a bit of a longer ride. I gave it a full chain lube up, and left it on the biggest front cog, which aligns directly with the smallest rear cog. Didn't feel like I needed any more gears than those 6. It changes those gears smoothly and completely without drama, with just a single click of the twist grip. But I do need to work on my fitness, I am acutely aware of that. Mulling over a change of tyres again.
Did not go out yesterday, will force myself to go out again today. But it is 'ot, Mum.

In truth Al, most people can ride anything and enjoy it, so long as the machine near enough fits them, and functions as intended. Like cars, some bikes are better made, or perform better than others, but similarly, great fun can be had with the most basic of kit.
Maybe just fully establish that you are going to cycle more in the long term before comitting to a significant purchase. If you're enjoying the bike you have then that's actually just great.
Chances are, the one you have will be just fine for a while, cheaper components will wear out more quickly and a "better" bike would of course feel nicer to ride, but while its providing you with fun and a bit of excercise then it's doing its job.
I'd say that when/if you're ready, go for something that's better than you think you need, you'll not regret it, and that old thing about quality being remembered longer than price really does apply.
I'd not spend anything much more on the current bike, just keep the tyres pumped and the chain lubed and enjoy it for what it is.

Quite challengingly flinty and rooty in places but nicer than the A4074. This week marks ten years since we relocated here, but it's only in the last few weeks that I've really begun to feel I know my way around away from the main roads. It's an ill wind and all that.

Came back down the A4074 from Tokers Green, it's a nice wide road once you get to the Slack Paddle, and a nice downhill blatt all the way home.
I see you stopped off in the boozer. Attaboy.
