75 mile round trip to Edinburgh. Had planned to try and break my 100 mile duck but A. I didn't get out my bed in time B. I had hotdogs Fritters and copious amounts of Peroni last night. C. My route brought me just past my house at the 75 mile mark and my knees just weren't going to allow me to cycle past!
All in all a good run, averaged 16mph over the journey. One scarey moment on the A71 when I was passed by police, fire and ambulance and five mins along the road there they were dealing with a serious head on smash. Thanked my lucky stars I had stopped a bit before to have a banana!

Nope. Came along the A89 from Airdrie all way to airport. Then along into Edinburgh and then turned up to the beautiful surroundings of Sighthill. Then A71 all the way back.

Most I have done before was 82. Work is a 25 mile round trip so when I got home I was tempted to head to work and back, relatively flat, to do the 100 but knees might not have held out. Next weekend maybe.....

Take it you don't use clip on cycling shoes Bobby? Neither do I on the MTBs. I don't like the idea of the bike remaining attached to me in situations of extremis.
Having said that, I do wear a pair of Goretex lined trainers exclusively for riding, wouldn't want to continue my day in a pair of shoes I'd got sweaty from riding in. I know you have a more relaxed attitude to these things !

Nope - I have a pair of SPD cleats clip on, in fact I have two pairs.
One pair that are for MTBs ie. there is a raised grippy bit enclosing the cleats so that when you walk along the pavement, or even put your foot down when stopping, you get a bit if grip. And I also have a pair that dont have this so if walking, I clip clop ! Havent actually worn them this year.
Definitely makes a difference, even over the straps that I used to have.

Been up Llandegla today. ( Christ I felt the climb today for some reason ) must be getting old or something. Anyway, it was gorgeous today, the forest sections showing the first signs of Autumn. Pretty chilly up there until the blood started to pump too. We met a young guy on the trail who had got separated from his friends and was a bit lost. He did seem a bit of a fish out of water having just jeans, a t-shirt and ordinary trainers and a fairly ancient and very basic bike. Turned out his friends were all experienced mountain bikers with proper kit and bikes, he had tagged along and when he failed to keep up with them they'd apparently applied "Top Gear" rules and left him behind. He didn't seem unfit, and his appearance suggested he wouldn't have seen his 25th birthday yet, but he was exhausted, cold and kept saying it was "the hardest thing he'd ever done in his life". We took pity on him and led him ( slowly ) back down the mountain to the visitor centre.
I guess it's the old thing about what you're used to and knowing what to expect.

Well, today was absofreakinglutely brilliant ! Sun shone on the frosted mountain and forest, trails quite dry and I was feeling "connected" to the bike. About an hour's off road steep climb to the trailhead, which in only 3C was a bit of a leg and lung burner, but once there it was just stunning. About half way up the hill I was seriously asking myself why the hell I put myself through all this, but about 500 yards into the 8 mile descent I remembered. Loads of airborne moments, no solid objects hit and no unplanned dismounts !
I shall miss it when the body won't do it anymore.
Having said that, I got chatting to a guy with an electrically assisted bike up the hill, not that old, way younger than me, but he ruefully told me that his ticker was a bit of a problem but he didn't want to give up his hobby. Maybe that's the answer when the question arises.
