Rainwater gathering? The NZ government has a cunning plan to charge people who collect rainwater on their own property! I kid you not. Probably only a matter of time before the water companies in the UK steal the idea…

Using figures from a website in Corfu for rainfall, one particular place had over 1.5m of rain last year (over 0.5m of that in October... and 0.285m on 7th October!). Imagine what Corfiots could be charged for water. Not sure where you'd store it all or calculate how much has been gathered though.

At my house (ruin) in Montenegro, there is a semi-underground stone built water collection tank of gargantuan proportions, with a huge arched stone ceiling like a Roman aqueduct - there isn't any mains water on the peninsula yet. The local villagers have been using it with our permission (delighted to give it) to obtain water for their crops/animals etc. I actually feel a bit guilty that when get around to renovating the property they might not be able to use it any more, but sadly the local population is either dying off or their offspring are moving away to brighter lights, a common tale in rural parts of Europe sadly. When we visited this year we found that the house opposite ours, which was previously occupied by the last remaining goat-herd old lady in the viullage, is now inhabited by a retired German gentleman (W210 E class diesel saloon in front, silver of course). Such is life I suppose, the only people wanting these properties now are outsiders, just as we are.
Corfu ain't far away from our place as the crow flies, but I'm not sure if there's a way of getting to it directly from the Montenegrin mainland, or even Albania come to that, despite it only being a spit and a stride across the water. I'll investigate that now I've thought about it, it would be a nice little drive out from our place.

Our house is built as a bungalow but with one part two storey. The lower storey is half a level below 'ground level' and the room above, is therefore half a level above ground level. The lower room has only one window on the western end. Therefore it retains a pleasant temperature all year round only needing a bit of a top up in winter as heat rises. This summer it has been very pleasant and was the only room I could use over the weekend. Luckily it is our TV room so I could spend all day there....

Puzzled. Isn’t Corfu the entire length of Albania (400km or so) away from anywhere in Montenegro?

Yes you're quite right both of you, it isn't off the coast of Montenegro directly. I wasn't saying that. But it isn't all that far from it either, for a short/weekend trip to be fairly feasible in theory. My place is on the Lustica peninsula, near Tivat. EDIT: Hmm, maybe a bit of a drag. 8 hours from my place to Saranda for the ferry to Corfu. Bit further than I envisaged. Maybe worth the journey for a week's visit. A more leisurely trip would be ferry from Bar to Bari, drive to Brindisi, ferry to Corfu from there.

Waiting for the Eurotunnel yesterday got talking to a lad who was off on his holidays with his wife/gf/partner.
Driving down through France via Reims, Annecy and on down to Marseille for the ferry to Majorca, spending a couple of nights in each place en route.
We got talking about ferries, he said he paid (remember this is August) 85€ for the 12h crossing with car. Kind of makes you realise how much of a mug P&O and DFDS takes people for with their 12h crossings of the North Sea.

Didn't know there was a ferry from Marseille to Majorca, I'll make a mental note of that. 85 eurosheets is a bit of a bargain.
