Our south facing back garden is a total sun trap, which we love. Bring it on!

We have that when we want it at the northern end of our garden (which makes the garden sound a lot longer than it is.) Best of both worlds!
The last few years, I've been cultivating - or carefully neglecting - a 'meadow' rather than the conventional suburban-desert lawn. MrsB1 isn't keen, as it isn't her idea of 'neat', but this summer it's really paid off, as the clover and coltsfoot have deeper roots than the grasses, so have kept going better and greener. Good for insects too, which means good for birds. And I've not used the mower for a month or more, and then only on its highest setting.

We eat the majority of our meals outside during the summer. I also set myself up with my laptop at a table under a mahoosive brolly on the patio to work when the weather allows. Sometimes I/we even sleep overnight outside under the stars if it’s warm. Love it. Fortunately, we all have skin that tans very easily and we don’t tend to suffer from sunburn unless we spend stupidly long in the rays. Sitting outside now in fact as I type.

Had a short sharp and very heavy downfall near Glasgow yesterday and a few drops overnight in Manchester. I was reading that Germany and central Europe suffer from extremes of weather more than we do on our island. We also need to husband our water resouces better than we do. We rely upon rain throughout the year but the current reservoir capacity is only just enough and we need more resiliance.
My house faces East with a West facing garden so sunlight in peak of the day hits the roof and walls but only one small window. We have tall trees at the back of the garden to reduce a bit of the afternoon sun. The best things we have is a partly below ground room which therefore has a more even temperature across the year and it is comfortable to sleep in. I had to sleep in there last week when Espadrille had Covid - it was very pleasant - even the dog joined me.

I was reading that Germany and central Europe suffer from extremes of weather more than we do on our island. Continental climate, away from the influence of the ocean, so different kinds of extreme weather - more very high or very low temperatures, but less of the Atlantic-storm kind of thing we get here.

The mid west of the USA must be similar to Europe I expect. Seen some torrential storms in Wichita on YouTube.

How’s everyone bearing up? A balmy 32°C here in West Wales.

I've not got an outside temperature gauge in the shade but it's pretty warm here in Manchester. The hallway (mostly shaded) has got to 28°C and my home office is 31°C. At least it's not humid!

We went biking in Delamere forest this morning, pleasant enough ride especially when under the tree canopy, and have lazed about in the garden this afternoon with cold drinks and books. Swimming tonight. It’s like being in the South of France for free! Best knock up a salad later I guess. Could get used to this.

Odd isn’t it: the media and the health experts seem to believe that thousands of people are dying in the streets as I type?! More fear-mongering hyperbole…

I suspect it’s all to do with viewing/listener/reader numbers competition. Even the more “traditional” media sources are losing ground due to the plethora of modern ways to get attention to their publications and programmes. Over sensationalising sells. The power of bad news over good etc.

Phew wot a scorcher!
Yesterday morning was quite pleasant and when I got into the office I shut all the blinds and the day was OK - until I started with a sore throat, cough and sneezing.
This morning was much hotter and the office is quiet sweaty and uncomfortable. However two tests so far class me as negative for Covid but not feeling 100%.
Yesterday afternoon I was about to say that our daughter's school was ridiculous for closing when it is air-conditioned, when one of my staff who has to take the tram from Bury to Manchester and train to Glossop to get home, came in and advised she had no way of getting home. Trams and trains both cancelled... Ooops. I did think about suggesting she stay over in a local hotel at our expense when I realised that a) she might not get home today and b) another colleague offered to drive her home. So problem averted and she can work from home. Made me realise that staff in the school might be similarly affected.
Looking forward to some rain later in the week apparently...
