We now have the leader we should have had several weeks ago. Whether he is leader the country needs is another matter. Only time will tell.

He speaks well, and for me the most important word he uttered was “integrity”. Let’s hope that much proves true. I still can’t begin to agree with or understand his continued belief in Brexit, but that’s a done deal, and I guess it’s better to have someone in office who believes it can work and wants to make it work. Maybe he knows something I don’t, let’s hope so anyway.
In short, in such tumultuous times, I’m much happier to have him as our representative on the world stage than Boris or Liz.

If you have to tell us about it yourself, you probably don’t have quite enough. I don’t doubt Sunak’s intellect — he could clearly outwit Truss with his wits tied behind his back — but that doesn’t make him a leader. In being the choice of elected MPs rather than ghastly, subscription-paying party members, he’s actually more democratically legitimate than Truss was, but we still need a general election to draw a line under the chaos of the last three years.
