A funny thing has happened. Not with the car, but with its V5.
I have received 2.
Each with different unique reference numbers. But otherwise all the info on them is correct and identical.
I suppose I'm going to have to phone DVLA.
Sigh.

Called DVLA. Dealer had tried to tax the car online at point of sale, but it needed transferring from Motability VED class to ordinary/PLG VED class. It can't be done online, but he'd caused a V5C to be produced in my name and address, which I hadn't realised. Then we went to a Post Office and taxed it, and that caused another V5C to be issued. The latter is the valid one.
How dull.

Maggie (reg number MA66 HDX) got her first proper run in my ownership this weekend. A sudden phone call on Friday afternoon - step father has had a heart attack in the middle of a field and is lying in the mud for 90 minutes awaiting an ambulance. Mother has managed to resuscitate him and they are waiting for assistance...
By the time I get there he's in A&E at last. I'm back home and at work again today, he's stayed in hospital a while and apparently he's much better this morning. Seeing Cardiologist and all that now.
Well, what can I say about the Civic. As per Humph's Pavarotti-a-like elsewhere, eez no Mercedes. Well, eez no 3.2 litre 6 cylinder diesel Mercedes. Of course, I knew that, but a long run does bring the difference into focus. It's obviously a very modern and very good car for wehat it is - cruised comfortably at, erm, certain speeds as I dashed down the M4, but it really comes alive on the empty B roads of West Wales off the motorway, deploying Sport Mode and the flappy paddles makes it great fun. It really is all about the revs with this engine. Worst bit? Really numb arse after 3 hours in the saddle. Didn't used to get that in the Merc. Oh well. I suppose it encourages me to make those necessary breaks.
Economy? Well, a bit surprised really. I brimmed the tank before setting off, and it's pretty much exactly 350 miles, round trip. I have arrived home with the best part of a quarter of a tank remaining, which means it's got a good 425-450 mile plus range on a 50 litre tank. And I think that's pretty good. 400 miles from £60 of fuel compares quite well with the 600 miles I'd get from £95 of fuel in the E320. I'd expected to be looking at 320 miles per tank, which was what I used to get out of the Mazda 6 2.0 petrol. I'll leave the mpg clacs to anyone slightly more obsessed than me, but I'm happy enough.

Hope everything in Wales works out well, Vić.
We'll deal with naming and gendering your car another time.

Thanks Dubya and Humph, seems to be working out fine for now. They've let him go home after monitoring and testing and all that over the weekend. I really need to have the difficult conversation with them about moving somewhere more practical and accessible, but after 35 years with this farm (excluding a few years sabbatical in a similarly remote part of Spain) my Mum is very reluctant. The shocking thing is that the A&E is only 6 miles away, but 90 minutes to get the ambulance there, and then they had to stretcher stepdad out of the field because of course the vehicle couldn't get across a wet, sloping bit of countryside. The two of them have had several life threatening incidents down there now, their luck is going to run out sooner or later.
So it's under control for now, happy to discuss motoring related things rather than face my tedious workload.

Here's an odd thing. It's that time of year again when the fashion industry goes into hyper drive. All the AW20 trade shows are coming up back to back. It'll be a few weeks of fairly mental travelling and transporting kit and samples all over the UK and Europe.
So, even an E Class estate isn't quite big enough for all that malarkey and I've got a huge ( 600L ) roof box on it for now to store and move the extra stuff.
I don't like it. It just irritates and offends me, and on a practical note, causes me to be circumspect about low roofed car parks. However, needs must etc.
The oddest thing though, is that it clearly upsets my dog too. He just stands and barks and growls at my car when I pull up on the drive with the roofbox on. No idea why it annoys him but he never does that normally. It's as if it conflicts with his aesthetic compass in some way.

Funny things, dogs. Mine goes mental whenever anyone sings Happy Birthday. Nothing else seems to trigger it. Yours is probably empathising with the 4 cylinders trying to cope with all that extra work.

Sorry to hear about your step father. Like you my dad is several hours away (by plane) and it feels very remote, despite being in a large town with fantastic medical facilities.
My reg is DU61 TYT. Renamed by my staff as 'Duggie Tit'. Enough to give them their P45s I reckon.
There are few ordinary cars capable of long distances without some bottom discomfort. Mind you, three hours on a Lufthansa A340 turned my bottom into lead. You would think airliner seats would provide long distance comfort....

Always try to avoid turning right when boarding an aircraft. It rarely ends well if you do.
