For your requirements Humph, a V6 Transit would be far better than a Skoda, and invisible from the cops. Wonder if they still make them?

Actually, I don't mind the idea of a Scooby bus.

Saw a brand new Tourneo on the way to work this morning, nice dark met blue colour. I think that's what's it's called, like a small transit minibus. Dashboard had one of those big sticky-uppy built-in tablet type screens, which took me aback a bit for a commercial vehicle. Looked like the driver was in a very nice place. I suppose they're pretty standard features now.
Thanks for the sticker tip. The number plates on the car are brand new, with the Reading dealer's name on, so they've already replaced them. I doubt I'd get another brand new set out of them. I'll keep them as I like having main dealer number plates, gives a bit of reassurance to a future buyer perhaps, well it does when I'm buying anyway. Not that it's ever done me much good, the Merc had Mercedes head office number plates on it.

Out of nosiness disguised as courtesy (and wondering how far mine has to fall) how much did you get for the E?

Very, very little. £1050. Could have got more privately, I know. Couldn't be arsed. Didn't even dare check WBAC, just wanted an easy life.
Woke up on Saturday morning and all of a sudden my brain alerted me, out of the blue, to the fact I'd left my SANEF tag stuck to the screen in the Merc. Blast. Zoomed down there and retrieved it. Phew.

Ouch!
I got £1500 for my old Mondeo estate at 8 years old and 186,000 when we chopped it in.

So where would that put your cost of ownership, counting non-routine repairs but not servicing, insurance or fuel? Our E cost us about £9,750 over 66 months and 55,000 miles, which puts it behind only the S60 for cost-per-month effectiveness. Woke up on Saturday morning and all of a sudden my brain alerted me, out of the blue, to the fact I'd left my SANEF tag stuck to the screen in the Merc. Blast. Zoomed down there and retrieved it. Phew. Some might argue that a SANEF tag isn’t much use without a Mercedes to carry it about. 😉

Presumably that doesn't include depreciation either? Just non-routine repairs?
If so, over four years and 27,000 miles mine has cost £3,000. I shudder to think what the depreciation has been.

I'd rather not add it up if I'm honest. It was a disaster.

No, it mostly is depreciation. I bought the car for £16,250 and sold it for £7,000. (May even have been £7,500.) The only non-routine items were some brake parts and a cooling thermostat, maybe £600 altogether.

Had a couple more runs in the Civic over the weekend. And discovered the S setting on the gearbox selector...how I hadn't spotted that before, I have no idea. Lots more revs all of a sudden, makes it feel a much sportier car. I'm increasingly impressed with the ride and handling, but getting wary of the road noise at higher speeds. It think that's genuinely the car's only reasonable-sized downside. Wonder if the tyres play a big part? Won't find out for 15-20k miles/2 years or so though when these Bridgestones get replaced with budgets (no fainting at the back, please).

....I suspect the tyres will be somewhat better on good surfaces (aka The Continent).
I assume you've done the obvious and checked the pressures? Fitters don't always get them correct when changing, and I've known dealers over-inflate on cars that will stand around for a while, to avoid flat-spots.
