But, I've just had the vehicle tax renewal through for the Qashqai. £200 now.
Feels like a lot, but that might just be my Scottish genes. The Aygo is only £20 and the Merc is £125.
£3.85 a week feels a bit better I suppose.

Eh? Has it gone up? I thought rates for any given individual car stayed the same?
I don't mind VED under £325 a year. The rates over that give me the heebie jeebies, but I'd still consider a SAAB 9-5 Aero auto at £555 a year...

Want to say, but can't swear to it, that it was £180 last year.

£555 seems like a lot to me for a car you say you're not going to use much.

Eh? Has it gone up? I thought rates for any given individual car stayed the same? ...when completely new arrangements are introduced for new registrations (for example as in 2017) existing cars (by convention, not by law) remain within the arrangements that were in force when they were registered. That doesn't mean, however, that no increase is applied to the 'steps' in those historic arrangements. AFAIR, increases between £5 and £15 p.a. were applied to the pre-existing scales this year. (The X1 increased by £5)

Too many cars in the fleet to remember but think the most expensive is the Merc at £265pa. The next are the Punto and Daihatsu at £130 each, which seems a lot compared to £30 each for the Mini and Captur.

Dare I say it, but if the main reason to have a big car is for an annual trip to France with bikes, then the avoidance of a large chunk of VED would more than cover family bike hire for a fortnight. Y'd think.

That is, actually, a rather good point.

Aye. But then, it comes out the same, roughly. £555 Ved and no bike hire = £555. £325 VED plus £200 bike hire = £525.
I still would like to have a large estate on the drive (Accord saloons notwithstanding) for, in addition to French duties, occasional load carrying and weekends away with the dog (and family, if I have to), with decent poke, and there isn't much which satisfies that criteria at lower than £300 VED, is there? Not petrols anyway, and I really don't want a diesel.

...even treat yourselves to e-Bikes for a different holiday experience.... (the ex-work colleague, who I walk with regularly, and his wife are both ardent cyclists. He is now retired, but she still works in the centre of Sheffield, and likes to cycle to work when she can. Downhill all the way in, but the reverse (obvs) back, and being Sheffield, quite steep and long. After a long period of mulling it over, she bought an e-Bike just over a week ago, for both commuting and touring purposes. Despite the foul weather, she hasn't missed a day's commute on it since, and the grin hasn't yet disappeared).

My missus bought an e-bike to get herself from home to Reading station and back. It was stolen from the station bike rack on Day 2. It has not been replaced.

I have some family in Sheffield, and remarkably enough, against all odds, most of them are actually quite nice. I've heard it said that if you get lost in Sheffield and need to find your way back to the centre, then just walk downhill due to the bowl-like geography of the city. So much so, that I've also heard it described as being like a bowl of rice pudding, bland in the middle, but with the best and most interesting bits stuck around the edge.
