Still got the dodgy tyre, EIII? I'd be minded to send it to the manufacturer for investigation. Sounds well iffy.

No. The garage kept it. I took a photo. Funnily enough the steering seems that bit better now as well. But then I replaced an original 2018 tyre with a new Michelin. The original was a Dunlop or something which I wasn't overly impressed with.

I took a Volvo V90 D5 AWD out for a test drive today. Fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres on ridiculously oversized 21" wheels. I think the car has been standing a while with the dealer as I could hear the thud, thud, thud of what felt like flat spots when coasting. Surprisingly comfortable ride for a car on comedy wheels. I was expecting 19" or 20" wheels as that appears to be the norm these days but those 21" wheels on an estate I think are a tad excessive.
Thinking of changing the Focus estate though the V90 boot, while certainly wider than Focus, does not appear much deeper which surprised me given the car is about 8" longer.

I do like the look of the current V90 and V60. But not so sure I like some of the inside - partly why I got a 330e rather than an XC40 in 2020.
21" wheels on a V90 seem a bit excessive. The 19" wheels on this Mazda though give a surprisingly comfortable ride with normal type dampers and springs.

I do like a big Volvo. I learned to drive in my dad’s 240 which was one of 5 consecutive Volvos for him. I’ve had a couple myself, a 940 and an 850. Very pleasant things mostly, though not as comfortable (for me anyway) as I’d been led to believe. I know a lot of people swear by the seat comfort of them but for some reason they didn’t quite fit me. I found the seats too squidgy if that’s the technical term. Odd really as I’m about as average as it gets in height and build. (6’ and 13 stones) Still like them though. Serene things. Cockroach cars too, they seem to go on forever. If you bought a new or recent one you might have it a very long time.

That was the thinking, given I've had my S60 for ten years this month, buy one now and not really concern myself about replacement before retirement by which time we might have a better idea what's happening with personal transport.
Equivalent of politician can kicking.
On reflection, the cost to change would fuel my Focus, based on the three and a bit years I've had my car, for the next seven years not including the increase in road tax, servicing and insurance. Probably 10+ years to some kind of breakeven for not as much more space as expected.
Lovely car to drive the V90 and serene place to be, didn't notice the four cylinder in the engine room, certainly not as intrusive as some make out. Not when compared back to back with a raucous 2.3 litre, four cylinder petrol pulling the Focus around with piped induction noise in the cabin. The Focus is of course a different beast aimed at a completely different market.
I did look at a C class estate 300de, too small. E class reeks of golf club and Werther's Originals out here and BMW 5 series is just a no, think angry gammon equivalent.
Jaguar XF estate I very much like the look of, horror stories of swimming pools in the boot put me off. Leaves Audi A6 which I'm sure is a fine machine, past experience of Audi and dealers, I'd buy a VW and keep the change. Not sure the Arteon would work though given the slope of the rear hatch.
Hmmm, decisions, decisions. Could be a case of Humph status quo until spring.

Skoda Superb, BPG. Skoda Superb.
Volvos always disappoint me on interior and load space. People make far too much of a fuss. My Civic has got more boot space than a V60 and a V90, and some E classes. SAABs were the real Swedish bomb. Don't get me wrong, I like Volvos, I might well have another sometime, I just think people make an unjustified fuss about their utility. Still wish there were a Camry or Lexus GS/ES estate. Bloody SUVs. Grrrrr.

Yes, the 940 was the last of the [journalese] ‘cavernous’ [/journalese] Volvo estates, and that design dated back to 1983. The V90 is good in the back seat, but no more so than the Superb, which is (a) the better load carrier and (b) cheaper.
There will be an estate version of the Volkswagen ID.7, apparently.

Anything with a DSG gearbox would make me nervous as a long term proposition. Maybe it shouldn’t, but it would. We’ve had a Passat and two Golfs on our company fleet that have had auto gearbox failures. Perhaps they are better now of course. With that caveat, the Superb is an otherwise attractive thing. As for “image” re the E class, I guess you’d first have to decide whether to care what anyone else thinks. Get over that hump and you’d have a fine car that in my experience would serve you well.

What’s a gearbox, grandpa? 😛 E class reeks of golf club and Werther's Originals out here. That might account for one Frankfurt colleague’s reaction as he put his bags in my E220 for a ride to Heathrow. Long before ULEZ, selbstverständlich. (He had an Alfa Sportwagon, into which I could barely fit at all.) …BMW 5 series is just a no, think angry gammon equivalent. Wütender Schinken?

Pretty much a lifetime ago I had an Alfa 75 3.0 while working in Italy and living in Florence for a year. Red of course. Ugly S.O.B. in truth but just a joy to drive. I had a Hawaiian shirt too at the time, I’m not proud of that but sometimes it’s cathartic to share these things. 😉

And slightly envy-inducing. Closest I came was trying to talk myself into a Lancia Dedra in about 1993. In Basingstoke though, not Florence. That had seats in something close to Black Watch tartan. Odd looking thing outside too but I liked it. Might have been a better choice than the Astra I eventually chose.

As I don't play golf I never thought about the image of my E-class. It was just a nice large barge to do long journeys in and the dog was always comfortable in the boot with the retractable net pulled up.

I made the mistake of choosing for my first ever brand new company car an Astra (J -reg) instead of a Citroen ZX. I went for toys over driving quality... not a mistake a made again.
