I’m sure that’s just the reassurance she’s been looking for, Esp. 😛
There’s a predictable lack of sense of proportion everywhere today. The red tops have gone full jingo, English exceptionalism and entitlement to the max. The social media commentators — at least the ones my connections are parroting as if they were offering something important — seem to think this is a magical step forward for women in sport, apparently because this is the first time the UEFA Women’s Championship had been won by a team of women. But then, the others didn’t happen in England, and England didn’t win, so they didn’t actually happen at all.
Just to be clear, this seemed like good sport, played well and in a good spirit, and that’s to be commended. But it won’t change the world, nor should we pretend it can.

It won't change the world , but given where the FA was even five years ago, this is a big deal and there will be change forced upon footballing society to ensure that girls who want to play quality football can do so. Until now it was very much like parents of swimmers, getting up at all hours to take children to training. Children from lower socio-economic backgrounds rarely swim and even more rarely swim competitively. How much better it would be if they could. Football has the ability to make that change for women (as it has with young men) simply due to the money and facilities that are around.
I do worry about the other sports in which women are the main competitors like hockey and netball. Will they lose out because of the weight of football money that will follow this success?? Or does it mean that more young women participate than did previously?
I don't know, but football is our biggest sport in terms of spectators and money. So this is a big thing in the UK and I celebrate it. It won't change anything in Afghanistan or perhaps even Brazil but a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

As this appears to be the football thread, flippin' eck what a weekend of football ! Fulham beat Brentford, Leeds thrash Chelsea and Newcastle get a 3-3 vs Man Citeh.
I watched the Toon game and beforehand was concerned how many Haaland was going to score, forgetting Newcastle had signed Botman. He had a cracking first half against Haaland but Haaland showed his class in the second half. If you'd offered me a draw before the game I'd have bitten your hand off, after 55 minutes I was rather more optimistic but knew, with 35 minutes to go, 3-1 wasn't going to be enough. Cracking game though for the neutral. Trippier yellow card I think was the right call. It was a foul but there was no danger of injury going with the wrong leg and brushing off De Bruyne. If he had swung with his left foot and carried through it was a straight red card, absolutely no doubt.

And it’ll be nice to see the red half of Manchester get a thumping by the Scousers tomorrow..!

It would have been nice to see the blue half lose today even if it was to Newcastle. The lesser evil I guess. :-)
I don't like this masses of money in football. So thinking about it 3-3 was fair. Both dropped points today.

It's the dirty money that's the biggest problem, Rob. I'm afraid Toon v Blue Moons was the dirty money derby.
Enjoyed the Fulham game of course (IT savvy son managed to find us a hooky stream and "airplay" it to the TV, can't afford the ticket prices these days to go myself although I do have Sky Sports for when they're on that, but not BT). Always nice when uppity, chippy upstarts who think they're going to walk it get taught a lesson not to gloat too early.

Fair result last night. I don't buy dirty money comments. The Glazers may be totally 'clean' but they are a disgrace to business everywhere.
I think this will be a great season for football in general. I am sure City will get something, given the quality of our squad but I would be happy if Arsenal/Newcastle/Palace get something. Good teams now with good managers. Capable of taking anyone apart - and just look at Leeds/Chelsea!
I hope United manage a draw at least against the 'Pool tonight. All my Mancunian Red mates are really down in the dumps and need cheering up. Don't see it though.

I agree on the Glazers being a disgrace. Leeds got a good win - what a big mistake the Chelsea keeper made.
I know Man Utd will not be bottom for long but it's kind of funny to see them there, what with their new manager and some top players.

Is it ? Sunderland didn't make it either. Should that be a concern ?
The press are banging on about Man City v Chelsea, Arsenal v Brighton looks like a good match. Liverpool v Derby could be a league fixture next season if Derby pull their socks up

Don't understand why the big teams face each other so early. Great for initial viewing figures but if two minnows reach the quarter finals the TV audience will be minimal... not great for the sponsors.
Anyway the Etihad will be packed with families and tourists and City will put on a great pre-match show. Then we'll lose.

Anyway the Etihad will be packed with families and tourists and City will put on a great pre-match show. Then we'll lose. So you're on the side of the sponsors, not the fans. The magic of the Cup is precisely because it isn't seeded and any small club can work its way through to the later stages. I'd watch Forest Green Rovers v Man United long before I ever even thought about switching on yet another Chelsea v Liverpool borefest. You've got it completely backwards. Its a potential antidote to the procession of Premier League football where it's always the same old faces at the top. The best and most interesting League Cup final of recent years was the fluke Swansea v Bradford City final. Football needs more of that, not more Liverpool v Man U. Man City are in very little danger of losing any given match. That's what's bad for football. It's boring.
