My fear, and these days it seems increasingly likely, that meat adverts will be banned by vegetarians, leather products by vegans, skirts by the Alphabet Club, Petrol by one bunch of fanatics, 4x4s by another. I don't think any of those minuscule groups are in a position to ban anything. They are free to campaign for any ban they like, but it will take government legislation to implement, as was the case with tobacco spopnsorship. And any government elected on a platform to implement that legislation can do so, Parliament allowing. Will of the people, innit, as the popular phrase du jour goes. I think you are in danger here of giving the mainly imaginary "woke lefty establishment" far too much credence. We have a hard right government fighting a swingeing culture war on this mainly imaginary enemy. I don't think we're in much danger of any pendulum swings other than further towards the authoritarian right at the moment, seeing as it is they who are in government.

Possibly quite true.
I was struck when I was last in the UK by how little of importance had changed, despite the media and political ravings over the years insisting that everything was falling apart and we were under siege from nut jobs.
However, nut jobs to one side, I still think we started taking legislation and regulation too far at least 30 years ago

In the case of tobacco, would you agree it has had a beneficial effect?

I don't know.
The fact that smoking has decreased so much is obviously a good thing. I would think that the significant impacts have been from the price increase, increased awareness of the dangers, decreased tolerance of smokers by non-smokers, and making smoking inconvenient and often impossible.
I guess if advertising didn't increase smoking then the manufacturers wouldn't want to advertise, if you see what I mean. However, many years ago when I was consulting at Philip Morris the advertising was directed at taking people away from other brands, not on increasing the overall smoking audience.
So I personally doubt that any positive impact from banning tobacco advertising would outweigh my perception of a loss of freedoms driven by a sector of society not liking something. And make no mistake, the drive against smoking has been driven by the vocal, and often obsessive, dislikers of the habit, not a genuine care for the health of others.
Now I don't care about people not liking smoking. But what happens if they decide that they don't like something that I do care about?

We've recently seen the government announce they planned to ban supermarket BOGOF deals and how obesity is becoming a problem.
They then pulled back from legislation due to fears of nanny state.
Yeah but no but yeah politics.
Everyone knows smoking can be bad for you especially if you have a pre-existing condition. Everyone has heard the counter story of uncle Bert who ate a hundred fags for breakfast with no ill effects.
Everyone knows chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner is bad for you do you ban potatoes ?
It's a difficult one. Think El Chil brought up lowest common denominator recently. This another case?
Edit: I think what I'm saying is I like choice. Football matches, when I was growing up, were for adults, there were very few live games and the highlights were always after the late news. The target audience has been expanded but the core remains the same.

I wouldn’t underestimate the reach and the penetration of the imaginary "woke lefty establishment". The nanny state is real and growing. Exchange smoking restrictions for red meat, or betting for rewriting history and abusing statues…

Well now, I’m not a Daily Mail reader. But, it does often feel like most things I like to ingest are bad for me, and most things I like to do are bad for the planet.
Fortunately perhaps, for me and the planet, I am unlikely to be around for long enough now to have much more of a detrimental effect.
Those of you who are, well, do try to have some fun at least before your personal curtain comes down.

Thankfully they avoid the fifth season and won't be needing the help of that Chinese player Lee Gwon

Tomorrow we are having a barbecue at a friends place for the last day. All the matches will be shown simultaneously on Star+. The downside is that the commentators are Argentinian, ridiculous, irritating and have never in their life watched a football match before, but at least we get all the matches live. We'll have 4 screens (Liverpoool, Brentford, Burnley and Man City) and a 5th screen for bouncing around the other matches.
I don't support a particular team, but I am very much looking forward to the afternoon.

Looking forward to it.
Leeds and Burnley have apparently lodged some objection against Everton who have allegedly broken rules regarding losses. Leeds are away to Brentford, Burnley home to Newcastle.
Something going on at the top too.

Of my friends one is a fervent Burnley supporter and another a Brentford supporter. Tomorrow we shall see the Burnley supporter suffering the ignominy of hoping that Brentford win. I shall of course wind them both up.
I did also her that with the demotion of Scunthorpe there are now only two teams in the leagues with curse words in their name; Arsenal and F***king Leeds
The Liverpool supporter is pretty calm, I don't really think anybody in the last 6 weeks other than the media ever thought that Liverpool could win the league. However, on the 28th we have a barbecue planned for the Champions League final. I am sure that he and the other two Liverpool supporters will be mostly intolerable and unworthy of conversation. The rest of us will have a great time.

>>game on for the quad. Not likely. Man City are currently 4 points and 1 game in front of Liverpool. Don't forget that Man City's GD is 7 better than Liverpool's so ending equal on points is not likely to work out for Liverpool. Liverpool have to win their last two games against Southampton and Wolves game and Man City have to lose against Aston Villa. Not really game on, is it?Now one point with both teams on 37 played. Betting odds I think are both teams to win and City to take the prize. I very much doubt they'll not beat or even slaughter the Villa but a draw and Liverpool at the top at 5pm is possible....

The most relieved man in England is sitting in the car park at the Etihad with the Premier League trophy in the car hoping, praying Villa didn't get a last minute equaliser.
