Oh dear, have I made it worse? Too late to worry now anyway.

Perhaps that was another benefit of having mine reprogrammed so that Off meant off. Never liked dipped headlights as DRLs; modern, shaped LEDs are a whole new kettle of ball games. 4 sets of dipped headlight bulbs averaging 5 to 6 months/set saw me paying Volvo to switch the DRLs off on my previous S60. It didn't matter whether I used Volvo long-life bulbs or aftermarket higher output bulbs they all went at roughly the same time. Headlights as DRLs are not allowed for new vehicles being type approved after the start of 2011. The DRLs were switched off on my current S60 due to it again chewing through bulbs, this time a set lasting roughly 12 months. Thankfully Volvo redesigned access to the headlight unit with the revised S60 making the whole unit pop out in less than 30 seconds, then you can retire to the warmth and change the bulbs at your leisure.

Changing any bulb on my S60 was absurdly easy. My favourites were the tail lamp bulbs; turn a button to open a carpeted panel in the boot, unclip the lamp holder, pop out the dead bulb, push in the new one, replace holder and panel. 90 seconds at most. The headlamp bulbs were under a black bayonet-fit cover; no tools or swearing required there either. (I think later, mid-00s S60s had a different design.)
Kinda miss it. We had the E220 for 67 months and 57,000 miles. Not all its lights can have been xenon or LED, but nothing ever needed changing. Same in 29 months with the 325, and I'm not expecting to replace bulbs in the new fleet either.

One of my neighbours seemed to be struggling with replacing a light on his 5 Series a while back. When I got home I enquired what the problem was. He could not figure out how to get to the rear of the light until I suggested he might need to look for a flap/opening in the wheel arch. That got him sorted.

Well yes... but he hadn't. I don't know how long he'd been looking at the 'problem' but I suspect a while. Getting to the 'bulb' (think it was HID) for the light nearest the wing was impossible from the engine bay. Hence he looked puzzled.
Sure he's better at his day job of financial adviser.
