Great, loving it. I've just updated the 'other' thread.
Currently getting ~24mpg. I won't get anywhere near the 36mpg brochure or 30mpg honestjohn numbers but then again I live where I don't have to concern myself with speed limits at times. It just wants to be driven. I only live 50 minutes from the Nürburgring so don't need to drive like a knob on the roads. Anyone want a hot hatch, I can thoroughly recommend one. Yes, there are other cars with bigger bragging rights in the PS department but for the money I think anyone will struggle to find anything that puts a bigger grin on your face.

I have always like the Focus as a car in general and the faster ones in the last 20 years have been very well sorted. About 16 years ago i went to Italy on holiday twice in six months with the family. First time we got a Focus estate TDDi and second time, same car with the TDCi engine. Even with these smokers, they were streets ahead of anything vaguely standard at the time. Could not understand why people bought an Astra or even a Golf.

And so the Beemer did its thing today, one of its criteria for choice, its raison d'être if you will. A three location train chase. Started from home at 07:45 this morning for a medium paced A3/A31 cruise from the Surrye burbs to Bentley in Hampshire, cresting the Hogs Back crawlers with glee.
Next, enough time for a bacon roll, coffee and loo use at the excellent Black Nest Golf Club clubhouse, I mean you dont put this car in a garden centre car park, before a quick spurt to Liphook.
Then the serious stuff started, not much time, an appointment that wont wait, little in the way of main roads, the dash from Liphook to Wylye near Salisbury. The sat nav seemed happy to chose back roads, I was happy to let it, punched into sports mode, this beast flew across the uninhabited parts of Kevin land Hampshire and Wiltshire. Bends, Crests, Dips, its was magnificently fast and stable - the car seemed to shrink to fit the roads like a pair of stretch jeans, dispatching any muck spreaders and olds in Jazzi who got in the way.
The run home, A303 and M3 was stress free quiet relaxed cruising albeit a little "whoopsie" at times when a glance at the speedo revealed three numbers.
Its done a couple of Hunde shows well, Its done a Freunde und Familie trip out well, and now it was asked to show its mettle with a schnelles cross country trip.
Lovin it.,

Isn't the best part when the car seems to shrink around you . I love that.

...rumours are that you've endeavoured to shave a little bit off the unsprung weight......
Have you noticed any improvement difference?

Lovin it., Ahh, the joys of a well sorted car with adequate power. A while ago I did some work for a customer in St. Helens and decided to visit my mum a few miles north of Sheffield on the way home. So it was a drive over Woodhead Pass, a road that I know well but is usually a crawl behind slow artics and mimsers who are scared of every bend in the road. After a slow climb up the hill out of Mottram a kindly trucker pulled over to let everyone past leaving only 3 cars in front of me. Safe overtaking places are limited but if you know the road, there are places where you can hang back and accelerate up behind the vehicles in front and make a move as soon as you round a bend and see that the road is clear. I popped the box into Sport mode and overtook all three cars in front in one overtake and with a clear road ahead just kept going. The car felt bloody marvelous with the suspension soaking up every dip, brow and bump in the road with no drama and every corner being a joy. I overtook two more cars and eventually came up behind a people carrier just before the turnoff to Dunford Bridge. As soon as the solid white lines ended I was past him and crested Bord Hill at a very satisfying speed. Most of my driving is usually just cruising up and down the motorway but that drive showed just how well suited the XJ is to spirited cross country trips as well. Best drive I've had for ages.

When I lived on the western edge of Sheffield there was a loop I'd drive, out North via Stocksbridge pick up the Woodhead pass heading West then drop off at Crowden to Glossip and back over Snake pass.
Brilliant Sunday morning run on empty roads.

Brilliant Sunday morning run on empty roads. Probably all but impossible now unless very early on a bright morning. But if they were clear, yes a gorgeous run in the right car.

I did a project in Sheffield for more than 6 months. I got to know the Woodhead and Snake Pass well. I travelled early enough going to avoid traffic. I did it in the barge that was a Passat 1.8T Sport in 2001. I got to know every bump and camber and could safely press on.
The Passat was a soft sprung barge.... more recent cars have been more fun over the Snake and Woodhead passes. But in a demo car Passat CC.... tried to get fog lights on (needed) and realised you had to quickly go from auto to headlights on the switch so all lights went off briefly!

Wouldn't be a problem in a modern car, would it? The light switch now I see mouse-click to ask the computer to kindly consider changing the lights on show. Certainly don't get even momentary blackouts in ours any more.

Volvo did that annoying thing with the DRLs effectively dipped headlights on all the time but after nightfall when you tried to use main beam on you just flashed main beam, you had to move the switch from off through parked lights to lights on to use main beam. The Focus on Auto provides full light function once it decides the lights are on. I always thought cornering lights were a bit of a gimmick but having experienced them they really do make seeing around corners much easier, especially 90 degree corners.

Perhaps that was another benefit of having mine reprogrammed so that Off meant off. Never liked dipped headlights as DRLs; modern, shaped LEDs are a whole new kettle of ball games. The light switch now I see mouse-click to ask the computer... ...is a mouse-click... Sorry. Was on the train.

Neither the CLS nor the i3 has an Off position at all. In Auto, pushing the stick forward puts the CLS into a steep dive...No, that's something else. This puts it into Intelligent High Beam Assist, which spookily fades up main beam when it decides that the road ahead merits it, then leaves them on too long for comfort when it detects something coming the other way. So I end up dipping manually anyway. The light switch now I see mouse-click to ask the computer... ...is a mouse-click... Sorry. Was on the train.
