You probably won't notice the van on the back of the car or on the fuel gauge unless it's windy. The first time we hung a 1.2 tonne trailer on the back of the C-Max the fuel consumption went sub-6 mpg. Driving uphill with a headwind did the car no favours.

Driving uphill with a headwind did the car no favours. with 340odd horsepower and 450 torques I certainly dont expect to notice it on the back, and being limited to the towing speed limits, I expect the mpg to be about the same. And as the van is about the same length as the the beemer, about half its weight and with self levelling rear suspension, I dont expect any tail wagging the dog either. I'll find out if its true, that plugging the van into the towing socket, initiates a different stability control program.

The bonnet of the car looks like it's stretched by the lens.... does that mean the 'van is shorter than it looks too?

The opposite, I’d expect. The lens is widish, so it exaggerates the apparent distance between foreground (bonnet) and background (caravan.)
Just let that last word resonate for a moment: caravan. It’s not a ‘sports trailer’ or a ‘lifestyle wagon’, still less a ‘crossover camping vehicle’. It’s a caravan.

Yes and that 'van is small. But we knew that. He only wants it as somewhere to rest most of the time or occasional stop overs with shows.

5.1m. Is that small? It’s longer than my car. Seems like quite a lot of portaloo to be trundling between dog shows.

A neighbour has one and it certainly looks shorter than a BMW 5 Series to me. Unless you include the full length including the towing arm etc. The 'living' bit is small.
It will be a bed/sofa plus small kitchen and a loo/shower I think.
A current BMW 5 series is just under 5 metres long. Even a normal wheel base 7 series is only about 5.1m
