What you describe, Avant, is pretty much how we're set up today. The 325 has plenty of life left in it - and is all the fun I need - but Mrs B1 won't drive it. I did wonder whether the better short-term solution might be to put the 325 (worth maybe £12,000) towards a CLS350, leaving his-and-hers Mercedes estates on the drive until we trade in the E220 (£6,000) for something smaller and wife-friendly. One flaw in that plan is that it will make my two years of BMW ownership disproportionately expensive.
Mrs B1's needs are, really, minimal and don't justify owning a second car for anything more than the convenience of not having to rent one or call a taxi. But guts and garters would come into consideration if I were to suggest doing without it.

Might go well? 😈

Incidentally, while in Turkey, there were loads of Dacias. Even the taxis were mainly Dusters. Used them a couple of times and they're really not bad.
Honestly they're not !
Also saw a few Lodgys. They are as ugly as sin, uglier than most sins actually, but seem very practical.

Of course they're not bad. They are excellent value for what they are. They're only bad to people who can't see behind a badge.
Have a look at the Logan Stepway.
Also, Dusters are now available in the UK with auto gearboxes. Would prefer an estate over an SUV myself, but it's progress. Maybe the Logan/Logan Stepway will get an auto option sometime

To contextualise this a bit, the Dusters compared very much with my wife's first generation Qashqai. Which is a perfectly pleasant thing to use. Of course my current car is in many ways nicer to be in, but I could see myself being more than happy tootling around in a well specced Duster if the savings were significant, which they would be to the tune of some £300 a month.
That's a lot of Creme Eggs you know.

Ok, well, think of it as kebabs then. You'd still get quite a lot of those...

The Lodgy received three stars in Euro NCAP's crash test rating, considered to be the lowest result for a car in 2012.[6] In the test the rear passenger floor panel and tunnel were completely separated and the transmission tunnel was deformed between the front seats. You get what you pay for. It not being a badge snob, they are crap. Badly built, unreliable crap. My money wouldn't go anywhere near one.

Does the Stepway come with a set of ladders to boost its performance to Astra van levels?
