My 1.4TSI Skoda is listed at over £30k I'll have you know. It is a DSG but it's not an estate

Actually, it was the Westfield, if I remember correctly...certainly it was at a time when the world seemed simpler. 😎

We did manage to stay in some mildly swanky places back then, very often in France as it happens. Tha knows, chatuxes and the like !
Trouble with the Westie was that I always had a sort of rim of dead flies on my forehead, above the sunglasses line and bordered at the top by my hairline. It's really difficult to be even slightly sophisticated when so afflicted.

Heh heh ! That's just reminded me, you couldn't drive the Westfield with any kind of heavy footwear on. The footwell was so tight that only lightweight shoes were feasible. Getting in and out of it, if the roof was up, involved a form of human origami. All worth it though once on the move. It was particularly good at moving. 😜

Two friends have/had Superbs. One (very senior partner in a Big Four international firm of accountants) has the top of the range 4x4 Kelment & Laurin model but only the 170bhp diesel. The other had an estate - also near the top of the range, but found his wife was sick every time she went in it. He changed the wheels and tyres for something less low profile, but the difference was minimal so he is now back on his fifth or sixth Volvo in 30 years.

Engine size is as irrelevant as badge these days. Output and performance, and damn the badge. Couldn't care less.
Really like the idea of a Superb 1.4 TSI. Great choice, Rob. Cam chains, aren't they? Not that it matters as a company lease but it would to me as a second hand buyer. Would have to test the latest DSG tough, I couldn't get on with the old 5-speed one in our 2008 Touran. Was fine on the open road, dreadful around town, the latter being where I spend most of my time. Have you tested it? How did you find it? Any hesitancy pulling away?

Agreed, Vić. Soon output will be all there is, with no cylinders or cc to count or obsess over. Even with them, it's possible to make it not matter; witness BMW's gradual erosion of mid-range six-cylinder models. I'd be perfectly happy with a four-cylinder 530i because I've heard and felt how civilized it is.
The last DSG I drove was in a Golf GTI two years ago. It seemed fine, great even. I was just disappointed because the manual Golf has just about the most perfectly arranged and spaced pedals I've seen, and I wanted to see how that translated to real-road usability.

Can't run to what would have to be a new 540i this year, but if my mileage stays low, an 18-24-month-old one could well be a contender by 2019. (And yes, even though I said earlier that a 530i would be more than adequate, especially in Southeast traffic.)
I've not driven at all this week, although I'm out in the Chariot this evening. I'll be curious to see just how far my mileage drops over the next few months - not including the road trip to the Jura, of course!

Does sort of beg the question as to the relationship between want and need if you're not going to be driving as much? Or, to put a positive spin on that, does it lead to a thought path which might include something outrageous?
I parked next to a lairy Nissan coupe at the leisure club last night. Not sure what its current title is, but I'd suspect it's a direct descendant of those loopy coupes they used to do. Looked meaner than a mean thing on mean day. Red anyway, as my wife helpfully pointed out...
