Daft as it must sound, I'd quite like to see it, give it a pat so to speak. I liked that car.

If you want to pat a dodgy Mondeo, there must be plenty to choose from. Or is it all Bentleys in Cheshire?

I saw my old 2003 Ford Galaxy last summer. It was an absolute state, smashed lights, dents and scratches, an utter tip of a car. It was in really nice nick when I wisely traded it in for that Laguna...
I also saw our old 2002 Golf TDi (which I wisely traded in for that SAAB 9-5) a while back, I wanted to catch the drivers attention and pull him over to get his address, so I could send him the spare key for it I still have. But he was away down the A33 in a cloud of black smoke and took a side road in a different direction.
Good old cars the Galaxy and Golf. Both with the venerable VW 1.9TDi PD engine and TC auto. They'd probably still be doing sterling service for us if I'd kept them, but I have of course wisely spent thousands on replacing them and repairing their replacements because, well, you know, er, that thing. You know.

Interestingly, or perhaps not, most of the Bentley employees around here seem to choose Skodas as their company or "scheme" cars as they refer to them.

Mrs A now fancies Skoda. She's still grumbling about replacing the Merc (too big, makes me look like an Albanian gangster), even after spending £££ on it. Likes Superb estate and Kodiaq. Which are, of course, not too big...
I'll keep holding on. A bit of 2 years an I may relent, when finances are due to loosen a wee bit.

Joy. But I'm not too scared of it. I've had it, it's meh, all types of transmissions can go south. Several local indie VW group specialists around here. No biggie. They've been around about 12 years now so are a known quantity.

I know you keep posting pictures, but I can't see them from behind this firewall sadly.

Ok. Thought I was missing some rude and amusing pictures.
The point about DSG is worth discussing though. Is it really any more scary than a TC auto, or a clutch with a plastic DMF, or any other transmission horrors? I've had one automatic gearbox replaced and one torque converter refurb in the last 5 years. Second hand cars, they go wrong.

Just looked up the Golf and the Galaxy, both still MOTd. The Golf was showing 115k miles in Jan 17, then 12k (sic) miles in Feb 18. Whoops. Galaxy is on 138k, and had a major list of scheisse on one MOT, which must have been after I saw it. Cracked lights, windscreen all that jazz. How anyone can put a car in for an MOT with broken lights thinking it will pass defies belief. Anyway, seems it's all been fixed and it's on the road again.

Your E class is the sort of car you could, if you chose to do so, run more or less indefinitely. It would just get more interesting as it aged.

The MOT history check can throw up some interesting stuff. Most of my vehicles I can remember the registration of (which should be all of them, but my last company car seems to have vanished into mid-air) seem to have gone on to decent mileages, with a number of them still running. My old company V70 has a record which indicates it finally passed away somewhere north of 180K miles, which is quite surprising, as the recorded history is one of increasing issues, including, somewhere in its mid-life, this Reason(s) for failure Emissions not tested (7.0) Nearside Headlamp aim too low (1.8) Nearside Front Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1) Offside Front Brake hose excessively deteriorated (3.6.B.4d) Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2) Advisory notice item(s) Windscreen has damage to an area less than a 10mm circle within zone 'A' (8.3.1a) Front brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i) engine excessively noisey level checked and topped up with 3 litres of oil-still noisey Child seat fitted not allowing full inspection of adult belt Play in steering rack inner joint(s) o/s/f tyres low on edges ....a not atypical annual entry (in fact, apart from the oil it is more up-beat than most). Methinks it was not well-treated.
