I agree re V90: if you're going to spend north of £35k you need at least 6 cylinders. The V90 is gorgeous, in every way. In and out. But yes, only 4 is a compromise at this level of indulgence

Neighbour has just bought an F-Pace.
He spec'd it in metallic grey with black and red leather to match the black wheels and red brake calipers.
Nice car ruined by the gangsta' costume.

I've been browsing cars online recently (do I get a second hand car later this year to replace the A3).... some hideous interior choices. Like red leather. Ugh.

Hada clamber over one as the tech was doing the dealer prep, yeah nice mota, but too high and no boot space for the doggy. and your neighbour clearly thinks he is a drug dealer. It's even too pimpy for Basingstoke

Six-cylinder engines (and I've got one, remember) are going the way of chokes and starting handles; Eventually, of course, all cylinders will go the same way. No point wailing about it, any more than anyone sensible misses steam power for everyday transport.
I'd have a four-cylinder V90, to replace my four-cylinder Mercedes. If it has enough room. There's a test drive invitation waiting in my inbox.

I can only hope you're wrong, WDB! I wonder - is a six all that less efficient than a four? The last six I had was the Z3 (2.2 litre) which if I remember right did 36 mpg on a long run, and about 32 in town. That was only about 2 mpg worse than SWMBO's four-cylinder 1.6 Mini Cooper. Admittedly the 4-cyl 2.0 petrol Octavia was better than both - which suggests that it's largely down to the particular engine.

He (WDB) is of course correct. Sadly.
Go and buy a new BMW 330i and you get a 4 pot turbo!
Manufacturers are building the cars to pass emissions testing that is very gentle. Small capacity petrol engines are better at that.
Get them out on the road and spool up those turbos though and it's a in different picture.

The D5 has some kind of compressed air instant supercharger to do away with turbo lag

And if I had enough garage space that's what I would do, keep the paid up XC70, which does everything I need admarably and then add a nice classic fun toy to the stable As it is I may need to reserve space for a camper or caravan ( shock horror)

Find dedicated storage for a van

Meh... Find dedicated storage for a van I suspect Nogbad's neighbours would be happier if 'van were stored. Restrictions on 'vans at home are common subject for covenants and action by councils. Ours only comes home after long trips and stays only for as long as required to clean and re-supply.

Nah, there was a covenant about everyone maintaining a fruit tree in the garden ( I think I am the only one doing it - a pear tree which has to be 50 years old at least ), but as the house is 80 years old, covenants are more or less unenforceable, and there are no council rules about vans on the front of the plot. Tho there are now rules about the drive and front being water permeable if changes are made

...Volvos do, of course, have a reputation (deserved or otherwise) for longevity. I was moved today (clearing paperwork which included some details of old company cars) to check up on a few ex-companions. The 2001 V70 I had has just clocked up 180,000 miles at MOT in January. Quite surprising given it was a petrol, and amongst its (very mixed and quite long) MOT advisory history is the following, a good few years back: "engine excessively noisey (sic) level checked and topped up with 3 litres of oil-still noisey" I did like that car, though.
