I do get what you're saying about the pins etc, but I've got a feeling that, strangely enough, I'd quite enjoy the honesty, if that's the right word, of such a car. Thing is, I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to own, or have the use of a lot of cars over the years. Some of them fairly "fancy" things and others more utilitarian. One in particular, in the latter category, was my old Defender. Cranky old thing and certainly not posh, but it just put a smile on my face. I have a sneaking suspicion that a Duster might remind me of some of that.
All that said, while I continue to have to use a car as much as I do, it is nice to have one I enjoy as much as the one I have now.

You can spec Dacia with autoboxes now. Wasn't possible in the UK until just recently. I'd be more than happy tootling around in a Logan or a Duster. Or a Sandero come to that. However I'd like something with a bit more grunt for those long summer drives, fully laden. It's a shame they don't have a 2.0 diesel option. But as a daily commute/beater a Dacia would do nicely now there's an auto option.

Yes but you are a well known motoring masochist who demonstrates your vehicular perverted peccadilloes on an almost annual basis.

'Tis true.
Were in your mate's shoes, however, I'd be keeping his current car until such time as the long term use of diesels is clarified and/or availability of petrol electric hybrid options expands.

...and he'd do well to stay clear of Volvos: www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-39397211Just think what might have happened if the other vehicle had been bigger than a humble Ford; say a bus, for example....

Yes but, no but, the bloke says "I want, and if I carry on dithering and whit iffing, I will be too old to get"

Check out this crash test. The Volvo says "Crash? what crash" and carries on going ...though, oddly enough, they get the same rating...... (when I first saw the original picture of the Volvo, I though for a split-second it might be Al's Merc from the front).

Dont want to buy a nice car and then forget where you left it now do you? 😜

Nor does my newer one. Pity; I think the paired-ring DRLs on the Chariot are cool. But some parts of me are still only 12.

Knees? Although 12 year old ones might be a bit small for you. The existing ones might be better if you stopped tying ice picks to them though. Can't be doing them any good...

The damage is similar but the Volvo didn't stop. I can only think the deceleration damage to passengers therefore was not so severe.
But you'd not want to be in either car during that sort of accident.
