That is indeed a lot of car, and if you think, in time, he would learn to cope with one such as that, then where's the harm I suppose? But you know what it's like, if he's been pottering about in a small engined basic Japanese thing ( as many of that age group do and no blame to them ) he might just find that, well, a bit "much" don't you think?
I mean, it's all very well, but their reactions get slow you know. Only needs a bus or something to pull out on him and then where would he be? 🤔

A beautiful car without doubt, but I just can't bring myself to spend that sort of money on them these days.

Has he discounted the new E class 4x4 estate? I know another bloke who would really like one of those.

he said he wont go for the Merc as he doesn't want to look like a commercial traveler. Not sure what he meant by that.

Tell him not to worry about that. From what you have said about him he's a bit too old and scruffy for anyone to make that assumption. 😉

Mind you that example exhibited a few posts ago is spectacular good value. But a 5-series is so much an employees company car whereas an E-class is a company owners car.....

Something like the BMW I have in mind for my next car if opt out of the company car scheme. A lot of car for the money so to speak.
Or a similar sort of car from Audi, MB, Jaguar.
But that would be new territory for me. Last time I bought a car it was with my wife (nearly new FIAT she wanted) and before that much older cars as I started work.

If 'our friend' can resist the charms of the new 5-series Touring, there should be some good deals on brand new examples of the run-out model. With such a nice amount to spend, and with the idea of keeping the car long-term, I'd want to buy new, rather than risk something nearly-new and caned by its first owner.
Has the 5-series passed the dog-cage test? I think there might be ribald laughter from the German-taxi-driving fraternity if the only new estate it fitted in was the Skoda Superb.

Last time I bought a car it was with my wife... I didn't know you could do that. Did they put her on the forecourt? Probably better if she went to auction; would have been awkward if she took a while to sell and you had to pass her every day on the way to work. The £28k 5 estate does look tempting, but look at it another way: £28k to a private seller - for a car that could suffer expensive problems? I've been very impressed by my two Approved Used Germans, but both have had things fixed under the extended warranty. The BMW needed a complete climate control stripdown that took two days and would have cost well into four digits; all handled smoothly and without teeth-sucking. Yes, you could self-insure with the saving by buying privately, but I'd ask why someone with a car like this trying to sell it privately in the first place.

Probably his recently pensioned father purchased the car brand new as a last-car-for-life treat after coming into some money, and then father met some unfortunate, earlier than hoped for demise. Possibly bus related. Can't afford to run the car himself so he is sticking with his elderly 1.6 Jap estate car, having learnt the hard way couple of times that prestige marques, even Swedish ones let alone German, are a bit beyond his pocket.
