Probate sale? Probably his recently pensioned father purchased the car brand new as a last-car-for-life treat after coming into some money, and then father met some unfortunate, earlier than hoped for demise. Possibly bus related. Can't afford to run the car himself so he is sticking with his elderly 1.6 Jap estate car, having learnt the hard way couple of times that prestige marques, even Swedish ones let alone German, are a bit beyond his pocket. But surely under such circumstances, father has not had time to fritter away all his recent legacy, and given the value of his existing estate so would be approaching the "miwionairs rodney" levels of wealth and therefore able to run his sadly deceased fathers last car for life treat car. But I guess Of course there is the slight issue of the surviving elderly and cranky widow determined to give the lecacy to the cats home

Has the 5-series passed the dog-cage test? I think there might be ribald laughter from the German-taxi-driving fraternity if the only new estate it fitted in was the Skoda Superb. No it hasnt, and the Skoda Superb Estate is not so far from a good idea. The bloke has an inbuilt dislike of the DSG gearbox tho, from he tells me a a drive of one from quite a few years ago and the tales of inherent unreliability. This of course may have changed, so I have told him he would be wise to try a DSG equipped car, like for example an Audi A6 estate and the fully loaded Skoda Superb.

In truth a Superb does make huge sense as an "it's my own money and I'm not going to waste it" purchase. I think I mentioned that I had a good look at one the other week. It was a 4x4 "Sport" estate with a 2.0 diesel and an auto box. Very very nice actually and cavernous. You could get a team of Huskies in the back never mind one domestic poochette. However, returning to the commercial traveller analogy, it's also the sort of car a company buys for that older guy they really wish would retire, he's done nothing wrong and he'd cost too much to make redundant, but they don't want him hanging on because he likes the car... I'll let you know if and or when one is suggested to me ! 😬

.....well, the requirements of the distant acquaintance seem to be changing daily. But if Skoda is now on the potential list, and 4x4 is still a requirement, your friend's overriding requirement for dog accommodation leads directly here: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201612130565477

Can't help wondering what happens to all that hardware of the car is hit hard from behind. Doesn't look very crumply to me.

...TBH, I wonder what you would insure it as. Manufacturer; "Skoda", Model; "Octavia", Has it been modified in any way?; "errrr, slightly" It does look interesting for anyone of a canine bent, however. ....and if someone just happened to chase, say, steam-trains around the country, a mattress in the back would provide nice air-conditioned accomodation. (I'm sure it said somewhere it was wee-proof).

As has frequently been said, after 6 weeks it'll just be "the car". It's great to have these dreams and all these options but at the end of the day if it's just you, the missus and the dog, get one of these: and spend the rest on something that'll be worth something in ten years.

Frequenting the world where most people have vehicles modified (from Mini Travelers to Winibagos and modified caravans) for the carriage and business of hounds, the answer is Yes, you have to declare the mods unless they are mobile cages (ie not fixed into the vehicle) Dog trailers are commonplace in Europe.

....well, GMP (and all the other police forces) probably wouldn't be very happy, but you could probably drive that down bus lanes with impunity.

He could buy a Dacia Duster and have lots and lots of change. I know someone who would save about £250 a month in bik if he got one. Not that bik would affect your bloke but there's just an example.

Well the bloke you know could do with a pension I understand, so 250 quid a month might be handy. Thea bloke I know would rather stick pins in his eyes than end up in a DD!
