Might it be SSL certificate expiry that's the problem with the Humax? A lot of root certificates have recently expired including on Smart TVs. So the certificate that was once used for iPlayer on older devices needs to be updated and therein lies a problem... no updates for software and no way to update certificates.
The BBC won't certify new kit if there is no guarantee of certificate updates.

So the certificate that was once used for iPlayer on older devices needs to be updated and therein lies a problem... no updates for software and no way to update certificates. The BBC won't certify new kit if there is no guarantee of certificate updates. No, it works on most things, just at tectonic speed loading apps and through the menu interface. My5 works not at all, has been acknowledged by both Humax and 5, and they've been "working on it" for months. (I, amongst many, have had that officially notified). I would guess that the hardware was marginally spec'ed from day 1, and has been rapidly overtaken, so I'm not really expecting much improvement, though I are annoyed. Humax used to be a reputable/reliable brand, I had one of their first HDD recorders, but are noticeably underperforming recently. TBH, I almost wish I'd kept my HTPC and hacked Windows Media Centre for Win10 (It doesn't work on WIN10 - unless it is hacked fairly simply, something I did quite successfully on my laptop. Problem is you can't guarantee continued working after updates). The recording and playback interface on WMC was very good, and of course, the PC would support most things you'd find on a modern smart TV with no difficulty at all. As another guess, I suspect the LG TVs will eventually get certified against UK catch-up services, but have been caught up in the pandemic. At the price, however, I'm not going to take the chance (the worrying thing from the very recent reviews is that they imply that even if it does happen, they won't get Freeview Play. That wouldn't actually worry me, but the fact that the previous few year's models all did get it sets a few hares running).

I was once very close to setting up a Certificate Authority in the UK as a subsidiary of a large Corporation, using Entrust software from Canada. It was the Information Security Director's pet project, and he was really miffed when I recommended we pulled the plug on it at a fairly advanced stage (which we did). There were quite a few reasons, not least that he was certifiably insane like most information security people (IMO, in both cases - and added for legal reasons ). ....as you were...

Good grief. What an absolute palaver. But if it's any reassurance, the 2019 model 65" LG OLED we bought just after Christmas has been brilliant and and all the online streaming and catch up services work quickly and efficiently.

The 55" 2019 model would have been an option, with Freeview Play and all the catch-up capabilities definitely there (and £200 cheaper than the 48" 2020) but it really is too big for where it needs to sit.
As I said, the budget 2019 LCD LG TV we have as a secondary, with the same LG OS, functions exactly how you would wish, hence the desire for another LG (and OLED).
I would expect a firmware upgrade somewhere in the near future (there are rather a lot of people complaining in reviews) but these things are never "nailed" on, and reading between the lines, Freeview Play isn't planned anyway (though that wouldn't deter me if all the UK catch-up services were individually available).
I shall "watch this space" (rather than the TV) and may jump as and when things are confirmed, and probably wait long enough for the price to come down.
TBH, I watch little TV anyway (though I prefer to get a quality picture on what I do watch). The TV is SWMBOs domain.

Everything is an initiative test and a degree level technical knowledge exercise these day. Just to buy a TV. Jesus. It's not just knowing all the stuff about the streaming services etc, it's knowing that you need to know about all that in the first place. I dread the day my Mum asks me to recommend a new TV, it's going to be carnage.

TBH, TV's, HiFi, etc are things I like to see/hear "in the flesh" before buying, but current circumstances render that less than user-friendly, so I took a punt on this, given the early reviews (and the performance of last-year's models). There's no way I expected an expensive new model "smart" TV not to have the catch-up services, especially as the headline description includes the words "Catch-up TV". Oh for the days of only having BBC and ITV (or even only BBC if you're that bit older )

The headphone adapter is here and works great with my existing headphones, so thanks for the tip everyone.
One thing to note - I had been playing digital files/Spotify off my Samsung J5 phone, through the Denon amp. Quality was poor. Today I've plugged in a Nokia 5 smartphone with Spotify, and it's so much clearer and louder it's incredible. Obviously a much better quality piece of hardware. Had no idea that it would make any difference to digital files or streaming.

The analogue componentry is the expensive bit. Moore’s Law doesn’t apply there, so it’s a corner that cheaper devices tend to cut. DAC chips vary a lot too, hence the proliferation of devices offering to improve on the onboard DACs in phones.

These aren't the sorts of chips I'm most interested in as a rule.
What's a DAC?

A digital-to-analogue converter.1980s technology but much smaller these days. Does what you’d expect but with widely varying degrees of success.

I'm finding I have to reduce the Bass and increase the Treble when playing digital files through this amp (Denon DRA-435R if anyone's interested). Suzanne Vega getting the treatment at the moment. Very nice lady, she's replied to me on Twitter a few times. Jolly good sort. Hope she tours the UK again, I've never seen her live and regret that.

I'm on the speakers at the moment, locked away in the spare bedroom/my new makeshift office.
