On which subject, I was forced by a road closure the other weekend to negotiate this: ...I didn't realise the new occupation was as a lorry-driver..... (In-laws lived a couple of hundred yards North of there, and MiL ended her days in a home just to the South, so I'm very familiar with "the squeeze". Even in the car I mentally engage narrow gear when I go across, and have seen an awful lot of rim-damage by people who overestimate the gap. That lorry-driver blew his tyres, BTW - god knows where his mind was!)

...actually, I now understand that that occurrence (just over a year ago) was a woman driver! (The previous occurrence about a year before, where the driver actually got onto the bridge, causing much damage and a long closure, most certainly wasn't though).

Thought surveyors were meant to be good at judging distances and measurements etc? I must have misunderstood the skill set requirements, just goes to show I suppose...

Yes, just looked up the Bucks Free Press report. I remembered the closure, but had forgotten the reason.
I’ll confess, I’d never consciously noticed the width limit signs, only the priority arrows by the arches. I suppose I just assumed “I’m in a car, this is open to cars, I’ll be fine.” Gives me a little sympathy for the lorry drivers who don’t see them — although seeing the width restrictors and pressing on regardless must take some doing.

Whilst I was away lat weekend, I had the car cosmetically fettled... Front and rear bumpers were removed and reprayed, with a new front registration plate holder fitted. They were scratched and scraped on all four corners. Minor dents (there were two by the drivers door handle ) plus probably a couple more. Body fully buffed and polished All four wheels refurbished Cost me £840 which I think was OK, especially as I have decided to keep the car for at least a couple more years and it has only just gone over 50,000 miles at almost 7 1/2 years old. Car looks great now. Just need to buy some new centre wheel caps (£6 off Amazon for 'fakes') and outside it will look like new. Internally it need a good clean of the leather and it will look like new everywhere.

Always feels good when the car has had special treatment or a valet! My A1 is nearing its 5-year service and in a similar vein I am going to pay 150 quid to get to 2 nearside alloy wheels de-scuffed at the same time. Hoping that the dealership can clean the car too; we’re under a hose pipe ban at the moment... 😕

Probably worth having done on a car like yours EIII, but not on my Merc which is probably only worth £2500 on a good day. Fair few scuffs on it, and one noticeable ding. I probably do have to polish up one of the headlamps before the MOT though, it's getting quite milky. Funny how one has gone and not the other, I wonder if one is a replacement part?

Milky headlights are a pain. Try toothpaste and elbow grease. It should do a good enough job for the MoT.

Perhaps not exactly to the same quality as OEM Mercedes, but so close as to be virtually identical, they fitted nicely, and if they take another seven years to deteriorate as the OEM ones did I will be very happy. In fact at £6 for four, I could afford to replace them annually. Does anyone want the link?
