An A7 service is due within the next month or so. Car so far as a full MB service history. It is now five years old and 28,000 miles.
There is a local independent Mercedes specialist, with some good online reviews. On the way to work is a Mercedes dealer and they did offer me (just before I bought the car) a service package. I didn't need it at the time as the car came to me just serviced by another Merc dealer.
I think that I will stay within the network for another year, but views and comments/advice welcome.

Will you ever sell it? If so, will its value be affected by more than you save?
It would be an independent for me.

If it already has a full MB history as you say, it might be worth keeping it up especially if you plan to keep it indefinitely. The deal is that if you do, it's covered by MBs free 30 year Europe wide rescue and recovery package ( I forget what it's called ) but it also includes a free equivalent loan car if yours has to go in for a repair.
Even if you don't plan on keeping it forever, a full MB history on a low mileage E would give it real edge over its competition come the day you want to sell it.

I can't say I will keep the car for ever. I have this suspicion that in the next couple of years I won't need that size of car and would welcome the downsizing, even if economically it makes little sense. Next year though the car will be six years old and due a major service, so independent may be the way then.

Bring it down to Reading, I'll have a crack. I've recently learnt all about oil filters. Nothing can go wrong.

MB servicing is a near-trivial expense really. None of mine has cost more than £400 and dealers will always improve on the published price if I ask; an independent may be cheaper but not that much cheaper compared with the benefit of getting a complex car checked according to the manufacturer's schedule once a year.
Repairs are a different matter. Mine has had brake parts and a thermostat, both simple jobs and done independently with genuine parts, in each case for less than half the dealer's price. No effect on the Mobilo recovery cover, not that we've ever had to use it.

Thanks WDB. That is the sort of logic I was seeking.
Alanovic.... I think I'll pass thanks!

Booked the car into Mercedes in Whitefield (north Manchester). Service is about £280 inc VAT. Gearbox oil change is recommended. I thought these were sealed for life components, but presumably not anymore? Car has done 28,000 miles. Is it really necessary?

May vary between boxes but the schedule for my 5G S211 specifies a one-off change at 40,000 miles. Coincidentally we bought the car at 37,500 and the dealer confirmed it was done before we collected it. Nearly 50,000 added since then and still shifting imperceptibly.

Just filled up (£84!), with V-Power, after a couple of tanks of cheapo derv. Engine much smoother; hard to explain, but less lumpy.

Lump it or leave it. I'll lump a six but leave a four.

Mine has had Nitro or French Total equivalents from time to time and it seems to make no difference at all: lumpy at low speeds, barely audible once on the move. Heavy on fuel by modern diesel standards. Quick enough when required but best driven in Relax mode.

Haven't driven it today. There is a spare Fiat 500S manumatic which needs to be ready to go back to the lease company so I'm in charge for some reason. Actually it's ok. The gearbox is way better than the Smart gearbox like this I last drove ten years ago, the internals are nice, comfy seats, chunky steering wheel and the performance is fine. It has done 15,000 miles in three years. Perfect car for the driver who had it. However, it has been replaced with a 5dr Mini Cooper auto for the same lease cost. That is cheap.

Just booked mine in at MB for its first ( 16,000 miles ) service. £229 I think they said. Includes free collection, delivery, wash and valet. Nae too bad really.
