Wheel refurb? Surely no-one should need that?

So the one-stop shop doesn’t do brakes? Probably just as well.
Mercedes wheels do seem to suffer by themselves, without touching anything. Both the old E and the current CLS accumulated white spots and streaks, and the centre badges seem to lose their colour. The CLS came back from servicing in November with its wheels looking much better all over, but the streaks and discolouration are back now.
Didn’t get this with the BMW or Volvo wheels. Something about the lacquer, perhaps?

For real quality you need four rings, not that old Ban-the-Bomb badge which soon gets lackered.

>> For real quality you need four rings,
My dad's first Audi was a rust bucket.... Good quality. Maybe ironic the car was an orange colour anyway :-)

Wheel refurb? - I'll hold my hands up and say Guilty, Yer 'onour. Scraped several on high kers near our tram station... Dents - two very minor ones near the driver's door handle. Can't work out how I did them... THe centre caps of the wheels with the blue and silver star are getting very discoloured; I might buy some more. The wheels are in good shape apart from the scrapes...

Talking of rust and quality, I seem to be noticing that more Mk4 Golfs are still on the road than Mk5s. I think there was a significant drop in VAG quality at the time of that model change, 2004/5. I do like the Mk4, robust and a nice steer. I sometimes regret disposing of our 1.9TDi SE 100PS Auto at just under 100k miles. I know it's still on the road form doing an MOT history check. Bloody good little car, that.

Didn’t VW design the Golf V to be cheaper to make than the IV? Might mean they cut some corners in terms of durability. Could also have made it less appealing to uncommitted customers, so perhaps it didn’t sell so many units. Combine those two pieces of barely-educated guesswork and you might have an explanation for your (unquantified) observation. 🤓

Was that meant to be ‘high kerbs’ or ‘hikers’? 😧 On which subject, I was forced by a road closure the other weekend to negotiate this: goo.gl/maps/4niPQKjAcK52goo.gl/maps/Cd1PfNybgWA2(No, not the sky.) Down there on foot early last Sunday, I used my feet to measure between the kerbs and it really is no more than 2m. I put a tape measure across the back wheels of the CLS and it’s 1.90m from sidewall to sidewall. In fact, the whole car must be more than the prescribed width — which is odd, considering its published width of 1.881m excluding mirrors — so I probably shouldn’t take it that way at all. Haven’t touched anything hard yet, but it’s bound to happen eventually. The other feature I don’t like is the steel ‘kerbs’ inside Le Shuttle wagons. We were behind a Range Rover last time that scrubbed against them all the way along the train. Again, the CLS probably has 100mm to spare overall, but it doesn’t feel like a sympathetic piece of design.

The Mark 5 Golf was more complicated to make and profit was poor. That's why the Mk 6 was brought forward which was a reworked Mk 5 which was easier and cheaper to assemble.
Might it be that the Mk 5 was only on sale from 2003 - 2009 and the 4 from 97 to 2004 that also makes a difference.
