I know, it is odd. It's like eating a low fat pork scratching.

Hmmm. Just had a text from the dealer inviting me to book the car in for a brake fluid change. At my cost, of course. The car is about to turn 2 years old, so yes, sounds like the right schedule.
Am I being unreasonable to expect to be able to ring them up, say how disappointed I am this wasn't picked up on pre-sales checks, and done before I collected the vehicle, and it should be carried out by them at their cost?

No, you are not being unreasonable. If six months had passed then fair enough, but a week or so? Ridiculous.

Check the Approved Used schedule of pre-sale checks before you call. Hard to believe ‘Make sure the car isn’t a week away from a brake fluid change’ won’t be there in some form.
Here: Item 63: Check brake fluid level and condition Maybe 'S'pose it'll do for another week' is an acceptable answer but I suspect not.

Used cars sold under manufacturer approved schemes over here usually come with a no servicing needed for 6 months or 7,500kms guarantee.
The issue is brake fluid is not on the must do checklist, it's an add on at service time at the customer's expense. Not usually included in 3 services for £500 deals either. It's optional. You could always pop in and ask them to test the fluid to see how much water there is then decide if you want to do it or not.
Think i paid about 40€ at the last service in August for it.
Edit: just read WDB post about item 63. Ask to see the results of that test.

I've rung and left a message for the sales guy (not saying what the enquiry is). I'll ask him to do the brake fluid as a courtesy, if not I'll start going on about the schedule quoted by Dubya - for which, thanks.
It comes down to this: if it's their recommendation that it's changed now, hence their communication to me saying so, then it needs to be done, and it should have been captured 2 weeks ago as almost due and done before sale.

Just spoke to the sales guy, they checked the service record and it was done on 31st July, along with the other service items. Well, the records say that...suppose we have to trust that they've done it.
He's also trying to locate an umbrella for me as there's a still a gap in the door where it should be...

Should be able to tell just by looking at it. Fresh brake fluid is almost clear like water, a couple of years old it's yellowing, older it starts to darken. I was looking at pre-registered EV6s. If I traded my Focus in break even on the cost to change after four years would happen IF electricity stayed the same price and petrol averaged 7.50€/litre over that period. Based on the usage from new it's going to take about 10⅐ years to hit 60,000 miles. Looks like another dose of Humph inertia is happening.

No one buys ICE cars with a view to amortising over a period of years. Either the car needs changing or it doesn't (or we use man maths). There seems to be this different mentality over EVs mainly due to the price of the cars and electricity away from home. But charging at home overnight, I have an economy of 3p per mile compared to about 15p per mile for ICE cars (45mpg average).
Inertia makes sense unless you want to drive an EV6. Great cars.

It was a man maths exercise in shiny. The money would be put to better use in the house than tied up in a depreciating asset.

>> He's also trying to locate an umbrella for me as there's a still a gap in the door where it should be... Isn't there space for an umbrella in both doors? My car had that - and came with two umbrellas. For some reason (cough) it went back with only one.

You can tell when it’s summer in Manchester because the rain gets warmer. 😬
