So it's here, and it's already covered in tree sap and leaves. Great time to get a new car, eh, early September!
Very pleased with it. Not that I've had too much of a chance for a decent drive yet, but you know when you get that feeling that something's just right? Really is my kind of car. Spacious, comfy, quiet, pokey. Everything I need and want, and just on the right side of the "too much tech and equipment" barrier for me.
First impression was that perhaps the driver's seat lacked some support in necessary areas, but adjusting the driving and wheel positions seem to have sorted that out. Time will tell if this does turn out to be an issue, once I've done my first longer drive. And the family will give me the rear seat verdict on Wednesday when they come home from abroad and I pick them up at the airport, with all the other silver Superbs and E Classes. One minor gripe I had with the Civic was that whilst the driver's seat was comfy, it always felt a bit small for my frame. No worries about that here.
I like the Android Auto interface, first time I've had that in any car. Works seamlessly and efficiently for navigation and music. Excellent. Really no need for built in satnavs any more. The digital dash is another thing I'm not used to, well the Civic had one but on this the display is much more changeable - I have set it to display a numerical speed readout in the middle of a rev counter, like any proper driver should. I also like that the transmission display shows not just "D", but shows which gear you're in at any given time also, so D1, 2 etc up to 7. Nice.
MPGs were showing as a gnat's over 40 on the drive home, which is nice, as I used a route involving a bit of motorway, a bit of A and bit of B roads. Decent enough. I wonder if I can tickle it up to 50 on any kind of drive? Will have to see. It's got the performance and (almost) the economy of a diesel it seems, without the nasties and DPFs and AdBlues and stuff.
Was disappointed that I forgot to check if the famous umbrella was in the door slot before I drove off from the dealer - it isn't. Bah. Will ask the dealer if they've got a spare one knocking about...and also I forgot to ask for the traditional car mats to be thrown in, so I've ordered some tailored ones off eBay. I am a crap negotiator.
On the test drive last week it was pouring with rain, and I noticed the car isn't equipped with a rear wiper. It didn't seem to be problem but looking at it on the driveway now after it rained overnight and I'm not so sure. Perhaps I'll get some of the Rainex or whatever it is called to slap on the window.
The DSG is fine - better than a trad TC auto I think. Doesn't have any of that famed hesitancy on pulling away - it tears away from the line, and I feel it switch up to 2nd very quickly. Haven't tried any of the modes other than normal yet - I suppose sport just holds it in each gear longer.
Looking forward to some longer drives soon, will update with any thoughts.
