Well a shocker from the Welsh goalie to then be sent off. No surprise the Iranians then got two goals.
In other news it was interesting to hear some England supporters on Five Live this morning sitting in Doha. They were enjoying their time and what was most interesting was that they had been able to stay in one hotel and watch many matches in person at different stadia as all the stadia are so close to each other (further distance is 19 miles). A real difference to Russia 2018 which thousands of miles between cities.
Bonkers building so many high quality stadia in such a small place but for football supporters it makes a lot of sense. Certainly London/South East and the M62 corridor could probably each host the world cup.

Wales doing a great impression of Scotland past, a point from 2 matches and hope for a miracle. Will Bale be their Archie Gemmill? And even if he is, they're still going home.

I think that was a message for his handlers, Dubya.

Football is finally coming alive. Pity it took so long.
A few surprising results now (France losing to Tunisia - not that it made any difference), Australia beating Denmark, Morocco beating Belgium.
The last 16 will hopefully feature more attractive football, like we saw from England in the second hlaf last night.

Still haven’t watched any, unless you count a sliver of Qatar v Netherlands that the TV happened to be tuned to as I switched on. Pity, really. My inner numbers geek usually loves the final round of group games and all its permutations.

You'd have enjoyed the Argentina/Poland/Mexico/Saudi situation yesterday evening Dubya, with about a minute of injury time to play it was looking like Poland would qualify by virtue of having had fewer yellow cards than Mexico. Then Saudi scored out of the blue and that meant Poland qualified on goal difference in front of Mexico.
But you didn't hear me say that because you're boycotting it so I didn't tell you.

Sometimes I wish I was interested. I know many are, but I just can’t begin to relate to that. I suppose it’s a bit like your attitude to fish Al !
I quite like doing stuff, but I really can’t get excited about watching other people do stuff. Wired up wrongly no doubt. Glad it’s bringing cheer to some.

I support your decision but somehow am still watching. I think the time protest (not that you or I would have made any difference) was when the decision was made to hold the WC in Qatar. I think if the various western FAs had any gumption (and I bet the Womens' FA would have done), they would have got together and told Platini and Blatter that they were not going to Qatar.
I still don't understand the point of eight world class stadia within a maximum 19 miles of each other. It's not like the Premier League teams in North West of England and London have decided to decamp to the Middle East. A bit like the various other sports facilities built with specific tournaments in mind, they will end up as white elephants within a year of last use.

Aha, Esp, you may be on to something. Pay them enough money (which Qatar can) and it’s easy to foresee some Premiership matches being played in Doha now and again in the future! Money trumps supporters remember?

…or football goes for rootless franchise leagues the way cricket has done. The big clubs’ local ties — outside Germany and Barcelona anyway — are tenuous at best these days. The money is in television, as with F1, the Indian Premier League and its various imitators. So what’s to stop Qatar setting up, say, six franchises in WC22 stadia and offering megabucks to lure star players to take part? It would wreck the international programme, as the IPL has, but if the money was right, who would care enough to stop it?

I think there would be enough opposition from fans to put a stop to that, look what happened when our most money-grubbing clubs tried to leave and go to a ring-fenced Euro Super League.

Well the World Cup is finally coming alive.
Spain knocked out, Brazil and Portugal putting on a show, Ronaldo being shown up for the egotistic prat he really is and France and England showing some decent class.
If England play the way they did against Iran and Senegal then man for man, they have the beating of France.
