…then I have a manual car for the long term, which Mrs A doesn't like the idea of. Just the idea, or the reality too? I fretted a little over using three pedals again when the Aygo arrived but it’s just fine, even with a ‘tired’ left knee. OK, it’s not as easy as the i3 in traffic, but very little is. If saving money will make other things possible and eliminating a car gives a useful saving, then maybe try exercising your famous powers of persuasion on her. 🤠

We like to consider the needs and conforts of our ladies, don't we? Am I supposed to go all Vladimir Putin, do as you're told woman, on her? I'll not be mkaing any exuces for not displaying toxic masculinity.
I've a preference for auto these days too. Not a need, a preference. That's OK, isn't it?
Anyway. I dunno. About any of it. Still. I just come here to think out loud really. Maybe it'll help one day.

Sounds like she knows that already. They all do. It's the red pill / blue pill challenge, and I prefer the fantasy world where I'm in control of stuff.

Sometimes, if in doubt do nothing is one of my mantras. Don’t force a situation or a decision. Especially after 4pm when it’s nearly beer o’clock 😄. Carry on musing though Al!

Not seriously suggesting that you become all dictatorial about life ! Just putting it out there (as “they” say) that if Mrs A were to compromise on her transmission preferences for a short while, that would open up a lot more options for you to work with is all. Anyway good luck with unscrambling it all.

Here’s Rory Reid’s take. Seats definitely removable. Fuel economy suspect again though as mentioned in the other review.

The roof rails/bars are a really good idea given you will need a roofbox if all the seats are used.
21mpg tooling around on his own though, ouch! The other reviewer mentioned 33mpg, again on his own. Fill the car with people, add a roofbox and you're at hard driven V8 consumption numbers which is at odds with the target budget buyer market.
A euro VI compliant 1.5 diesel (Renault must have a few kicking around) has got to make more sense in this kind of car.
It's interesting Dacia are jumping in to a market most other manufacturers are leaving or have already left.

I do wonder if the demise of estate cars is just a temporary vagary of fashion. Many here have, or have had them and found them entirely useful. Easy to live with sort of things. I can see me wanting something of the type for the foreseeable.
I could have, almost, been convinced. The lack of an auto option would be a bit of a put off, if not an actual deal breaker, but the apparently poor fuel consumption would be unacceptable to me.
Maybe the hybrid they say is coming will address those points.
Both reviewers seem quietly impressed otherwise.

I suspect, for the budget, the hybrid is going to be of the 48v starter/alternator to fill in the turbo gaps rather than any battery charge/discharge type. It's not going to be any form of magic to double MPG.

I do wonder if the demise of estate cars is just a temporary vagary of fashion. Probably permanent, at least in the way we here understand estate cars. It’s a useful way of packaging people and stuff behind a fossil engine, but it would feel like a wasted opportunity if we just went on doing that once we no longer need the fossil engine. Just as a Benz of the 1890s looked like carriage with the horse removed but the design soon evolved to suit the improved technology, so we will leave the ICE design language behind. Similar points arise in other areas. The iPace has a sound generator to play vroom-vroom noises into the cabin in case you’re infantile enough to need them or too senile to look out of the window at the rapidly passing scenery. Where incidentals of old technology serve a purpose — as with the shutter sound effect that tells you your smartphone has silently taken a picture — some old design motifs will persist. But I think we’ll soon see EVs that offer all the benefits of our estate cars without slavishly imitating their appearance.

So you believe that not having an internal combustion engine will take away the desire for a large storage area with a large entrance?
What do you think I will do with a dog cage, for example? Or in my case two electric scooters?
I see no connection.
As an aside, I don't want unnecessary vroom-vroom noises. Neither do I want loud music. I don't see that wanting either is an indication of senile or infantile mentalities. Sometimes people just want stuff that other don't.
