I suppose I’d feel quite bereft without a car of some sort even if retired. But I suppose I can see why many older people go for a a small economy car in retirement if it’s just for “round the doors” usage. I suspect I know myself well enough to recognise that I’ll not easily go quite that far, but every time I have occasion to “borrow” the old Aygo the thought doesn’t escape me that it is really all I’d need a lot of the time.

That is the other option, small local runabout covering 99% of all motoring needs and hire when/if it really won't do what you need (just make sure you have the full, maximum, no baxes, insurance for the hire car).
Edit: Like your Aygo I could probably do all my motoring with our BEV. It's quiet, comfortable and the cheapest way of getting about for nine months of the year BUT it's an SUV and handles like a fridge especially in crosswinds. Like our fridge I appreciate what it does and would obviously miss it if it wasn't there but don't have any connection with it. It gets washed once a year before it goes for a service, don't want the garage thinking it is neglected and I'm of the mindset if it looks like I don't care about it why would the servicing garage do a good job.

We would like to think that we have a few years anyway ahead of us to complete some “grand tours”. Of course we wouldn’t actually need anything super posh or whatever for that but it would need to be spacious and comfortable enough to include us, our bikes and luggage in or about it. Any second car or vehicle though could be pretty basic for local runs. My friend and neighbour who is a semi-retired self employed architect, has a combination that seems to work for him, a Transit sized Vauxhall van converted to a camper van and a Peugeot 108 (Aygo sized thing with a roll back canvas roof) The van does duty as a weekend away at the seaside platform for him and his dog (he’s single) and the little Peugeot is his daily driver, but he jokes about it being his “sports car” due to the opening roof thingy.

A mate is about to retire and intends to spend life in three month alternating cycles, home and overseas. So he does not need the cost of a car sitting in his garage unused for six months a year. He is looking at Onto, the car leasing company where you can rent on a month by month basis. Not the cheapest way but probably very practical.

I absolutely get it. A bit like my plastic watch, which does everything and more than its premium alternatives at a fraction of the cost. However, just as the watch wouldn’t win any prizes as jewellery, I suppose Dacias don’t really win any as garden ornaments. But, if you’re not a member of a snooty golf club it hardly matters does it? 😉 Walked past a parked new Jogger this morning actually. Seems quite a useful thing in the flesh.

I've just taken a look at the website this morning, in Europe they have a pure electric city car had gone completely under my radar.
27kWh battery, 140 miles range and top speed of 78mph for less than 23,000€. An electric powered motorbike costs more than that.

The latest Duster is a fine looking car. I can see them slowly moving up in the same way Kia and Hyundai did.

That's right Al, Spring is what it is called. A spec'd up one with CCS charger option ticked comes in at 255€/month with a 10% deposit (2,620€) and final buy option of 8,442€. 5,700€ deposit gets the monthly below 200€.

Would probably be a better choice than a second hand Leaf at those prices.
Just looked at some piccies. A bit high and crossovery for me. Looks like a Kadjar and a Twingo got it on.

Mmm it doesn't hide its Renault roots but at that price why would it. It's only ever going to be a city car, no battery cooling or heat pump. I expect it will be terribly inefficient in winter and perfectly acceptable for running about in the rest of the year.
Could be the car for my daughter to cut her teeth with. Would look very French with a few scrapes and dents and it wouldn't bother me at that price.

If circumstances dictate (as in it starts to be a financial arse pain) that I need to bin off the Merc, I’m fairly sure a new or nearly new Duster would be near the top of my shopping list. It’d be ideal for what I do a lot of the time, would cope with muddy tracks etc.

Back on insurance I think my motorbike insurance quote with 50% increase was of the we have to offer you a renewal but we don't want the business variety.
I've just looked at adding my 17 year old daughter to my policy to drive my Volvo S60 next year, it's just over 1€/day or 34€/month. I know insurance is typically more expensive here, that was a pleasant surprise.

Would she be allowed to practice/learn in that in Chermany with it being RHD?
