Just had our renewal quote for our multi car policy from the seafaring provider.
Quite pleased, it’s come tumbling down. £320 for my son (21 and 4 years ncb) £210 for the Jeep and £350 for mine with “business” usage included. All with legal protection and breakdown cover.
£880 all up.
Might still shop around but that seems ok to me.

I am with the same provider, shiver me timbers. I shall look forward to my pleasant surprise in March.

I took a look online at a comparison website. I've adjusted all our mileages down, the EV is used for the bulk of trips now - covering 12k kms in the first twelve months, the comparison site looks to have halved what I was paying based on these revisions. The comparison site reckons about 250€ for the Volvo (5k kms), and 400€ each for the Focus (10k kms) and Soul. Let's see what the renewals come in at later this month.
January 1st is the most expensive day of the year here. All insurances run from 1st Jan. to 31st Dec.

I’m with the same insurer and so, now, are all our cars. I went looking on Money Supermarket for a quote to get the Aygo insured in Boy1’s name and the best-looking (not quite the cheapest) was also from them.
But their online system then got thoroughly confused when it recognised me as an existing customer, so a phone call was required. (I know, how very last-century!) But 30 minutes later I had £100 off the original Aygo quote and £10 off what I already thought was a fair premium for the imminent renewal on the other two. A shade over £900 for the three, with one newly-qualified driver and one learner covered (not on the fast cars, of course, although I wish I’d asked now in case that was another pleasant surprise) is less than I budgeted a year ago for the Aygo alone.

I switched insurance at the start of the year for our three jalopies, saving around 600€ or about 28% off last years bill.
My motorbike insurance dropped into our mailbox this afternoon. A straight 50% rise for third party fire and theft or equivalent. I knew I had been overpaying through an agent, this renewal prompted me into action. Fully comprehensive online for 24€ more than I paid third party last year Vs 176€ more for continuation of existing policy.

Coincidentally, my renewal has just arrived. Fair chunk higher than last year, no surprises there with a couple of claims now. Sigh. Shopped around, couldn't find any thing much better overall. LV were quite a bit lower on the Civic and Leaf, but 3x more on the Rolla. So I asked current provider about staying with them for the Rolla only, and of course that meant losing the multicar discounts, so overall staying with them would work out £10/month more than switching 2 cars to LV and keeping one with them (Admiral). So I've taken that small hit and renewed, particularly with an ongoing claim in mind. Not that it would make any difference I expect, but hey ho, keep things simple.
Also got the mortgage renewal today. Taken a 3.98% 2-year discount tracker. Not too bad in the circumstances.
Nice to get those jobs out of the way and move on.

Here’s a surprise. My insurance works out at 2p a mile. “Hers” at 5p a mile and “His” at 20p a mile based on this years costs divided by last year’s mileage for each vehicle. But of course there was that business with the Aygo and a wall… 😬

Insurance isn't a variable though, you either have it, and you can leave your car on a public road (if you have a valid MOT) or you can't and it has to be on private property.
Cost per day is static whether you use the car or not.

It’s a valid part of the value-for-money calculation. Similar with depreciation/cost of money; what utility do you get in return for, say, £300 a month to have the thing on the drive? Maybe Cost Per Outing is a more useful metric than per mile.
Say keeping the car costs £360 a month and it’s used 20 times in that month, how much is £18 a time (plus fuel) relative to the alternatives? Maybe there are no alternatives, or those that do exist involve other compromises, but it’s worth considering against the idea that a car is something everyone just has.

True, if you want a car then it's just part of the day to day running cost. If you're thinking about retirement, you might then consider do I need a car ? If so, how much would it cost me verses a taxi once a week to the supermarket and one night out to a club of some sort out whatever the usage patterns will be. The beauty of the taxi option is it only costs at the point of use, if you're ill or whatever the savings are immediate.

My in-laws are a classic example of people who would be much better off using taxis. Their car rarely, if ever, leaves their home town and barely does 1000 miles a year. However, they just like having a car and can afford to have one. I do get that it represents continued independence to them at their age (both in their 80s) but it doesn’t make a lot of sense by any other metric.
