Well I think I can say some of the new tariffs you might be on might be a bit high. Unfortunately. I looked at what EON were offering now and the monthly estimate for me was an extra £30 per month. And now Even the variable Octopus tariff is the same. This is a mess. It's is not BREXIT related.

I'm sorry Rob but it is Brexit related, in so far as the situation is aggravated by our having left the EU's Internal Energy Market. We are exposed to global price fluctuations more severly than otherwise would have been the case. Not caused by Brexit, no, but worsened by it. Global BritainI suppose you could call it...

We switched to the variable Octopus tariff recently which I probably said earlier in this thread. Fixed tariffs with Octopus were more than EONNext so I went with them. Keeping an eye on tariffs out of interest with EON and they soon got rid of their variable tariff and the fixed ones kept being replaced.
Tonight based on my probably electric and gas supply they want an extra £400 per annum. Compared to my just ended Octopus tariff it's about £650 extra a year. No doubt it will soon be double what I was paying.
Glad I switched to a 2 year fixed deal with no exit fees.

I see some are being switched to Shell Energy for failed suppliers. So I wondered what the tariffs are like.... Could I find a way to find a quote or switch....? Not at all.
I worry that the ones being moved to new suppliers are about to find much higher tariffs!!!

I've been moved to British Gas. I wonder if they will do a decent tariff for EV users.

BG do have a tariff for EVs (Electric Drivers Jul 2023). But you have to call them to get on that tariff and also have their smart meter. www.britishgas.co.uk/energy/ev-tariff-home.htmlThey also say they may ask you to prove you charge a car at home. Cheeky.

...and not use it to store cheap electricity and feed it back into the house in the daytime - although, done reasonably, this would be beneficial to the grid. Our i3 can't do it but I think Esp's forthcoming Ioniq 5 can, through the right wallbox.
I've looked at EV tariffs before and decided not to bother. Our 5000 EV miles a year equates to about £200 on the bill, so there's not a lot of scope for saving unless we could use the cheap electricity for other things - like laundry, I suppose.

... laundry running overnight.... not here. And that's just the washing machine. Would never let something like a tumble dryer or dishwasher running overnight when asleep and never when out of the house either.
Do you need a different meter to get money for feeding electric to the grid these days? Or do smart meters handle it okay? Didn't the old analogue ones run backwards or is that a myth?

If one of the big suppliers go then they all will probably go and we'll see nationalised gas/electric? The reason for the smaller ones going is going to be applicable to all. Octopus is relatively new but with lots of customers but who knows how this will play out.
Back to a car providing electric supply - not sure that's all you will need. If you say had a Tesla Powerwall you need a lot more to even stay powered up in the UK with a power cut. Different in the US in terms of what you have to have for the Powerwall to begin with, e.g. a Gateway.

The issue is the house is not isolated back to the grid.
Matey comes along and thinks he's switched off power from the grid to work on a local sub and bang 10x5kWh Tesla batteries in the garage at number 22 reminds him it's not isolated. That's the bit that needs to be fixed before bi-directional power is a goer.

That's where Tesla's gateway comes in - it does the isolation bit. There must be other products doing the same.
Without the gateway, having Tesla's power wall gives you storage but if there is a power cut it is disabled for the reasons you say. In the UK you can have the Powerwall without the Gateway but in the US I think it's mandatory. That's what my brother has.

I would think solar panel installs must have some kind of gateway management though they are not producing anything like what a bank of batteries can deliver at any given time.

I remember Smokie/Geoff used to get money for sending energy to the grid... I wonder how that was controlled or indeed it was. But as you say lots of energy in a big battery.

Separate feed-in meter at the former parental home. Had to have it read periodically, like the regular one, but by a different company.
