She's graunched it in a car park (mainly rear bumper, driver's side). Claims the parking sensors 'didn't go off'. I have issued the statutory reminder that parking sensors are an advisory aid and guide only. Mostly polish out stuff but a tiny bits of bare metal just above the bumper to touch up.
Sigh. It had a couple of dings and scratches already, never mind eh?

I recently actually checked with our local scrappers whether they have any Qashqai door mirrors in stock at present. Not that it needs one just now, but she's had the latest one nearly 9 months so...

Right then. I've decided that I'm going to get the gearbox oil fully flushed and renewed. Biggish job, you have to drain from two places (gearbox itself and TC) and flush through with oil before re filling. Not bloody doing that myself. Might turn out to be money down the drain if the TC is breaking up already, but worth a shot.
Also, just noticed the rear offside wheel arch is a bit lower than the nearside. Measured it at about 2 centimetres difference. It has a self levelling system, and the height doesn't change when the engine is running, so obviously something is not quite right. Hey ho. Will get it looked at.

Bloody hell, I get uncomfortable when my wife goes over 50mph. She has the focus of a goldfish. I would be crying over 100. Recently*, the missus and I got driven home from a party by her Spanish friend in her 1.4Tsi Scirocco. Mad Anna they call her. Her husband had his hands over his eyes, and I only noticed our considerable velocity when the flash of a speed camera bored its way into my brain. * it was over 14 days ago now, and I dont think a NIP has landed on her mat. A quick follow up top this. Mad Anna did indeed receive a NIP from that evening, and did a day at naughty driving school. Where as it happens she shared a table with one of her colleagues. I can see now why NHS workers get their premiums loaded.

Seems like a waste of time and money to me if it is, and by changing the fluid you may only be masking an issue that pops up after warranty expiry.

Does make you think though, well, I suppose it's fairly obvious really but there's a lot to be said for going for a basic but bulletproof car if you don't want to be risking big bills.
That was the main reason I used to run Mondeos for work. Big enough to cope with my particular needs, comfy enough to cope with my miles and reliable enough to not worry too much about bits falling off. But if bits did fall off, break or simply wear out, they weren't too expensive to replace.

The warranty will cover up to £500 of a ~£1000 job. Oil flush and change = £175.
Another gamble, might win might lose. Changing the oil this week, still give me 2 months to act on the warranty, and if it needs the new TC after all I've lost £175 in the grand scheme. Which will be harrumph, but not catastrophe. Falls my side of the risk-worth-taking equation.
Get your told-you-sos ready.

I nearly bought a Mondeo hatch the week before the Merc, TDCI auto in Ghia spec. It was a couple of grand cheaper than the Merc. I'm sure it would have done me handsomely. But you pays your money you takes your choice. If it all came down to "what's the cheapest I can get away with", I'd be in a Micra.

I do empathise with your dilemma Al. Having a nice car is, well, nice I suppose, and as fellow car enthusiasts I guess we can all relate to that. What's more, if you're lucky enough to get a nice one that doesn't give you grief, well, that's great and the best of all worlds.
Your post this morning just got me to thinking what I'd do if/when I need to fund my own car again. Would I buy a premium model and risk the bills, or would I buy something more basic?
To be honest, until I face the question for real again, I'm not sure. But if you asked me to decide today, I'd probably just take on my wife's Qashqai and run it into the ground over the next couple of years and get her something newer ( certainly narrower ) that would last her for a good few years. While ever I do what I do, or a version of it, I'll continue to get through cars pretty quickly due to my high annual mileage so there's no cheap option really.
