Mine always "went" well. That was never the problem. All the peripheral electrics going haywire and the boot lid trying to eat me were more the issue. I have had a close look at the Lagunas you see running about France. I don't see many which would count as anything more than poverty spec. That's the secret. As Uncle Zero will tell you. The UK goes all glassy eyed for toys and buttons and whizzbangs and buys more up-specced cars. Mind you I always enjoy seeing the Vel Satiseses running around there too and they were pretty electrically flaky. There are three types of car require din France. The French car market has three types 1/ Small, nippy chic and good looking. 2/ Big wallowy wafty and comfortable 3/ A van. Preferably one you can overload. None of them need luxury toys. The French don't care about the state of their cars. If something breaks, unless it actually stops the car going, it remains broken.

The same goes for their houses too, at least on the outside.

It was incipient turbo problems that finally induced me to offload my S60 last year. The nature of turbos is that problems show intermittently at first, then with increasing frequency until there's no doubt what's wrong and only one thing to do to fix it.
Do you now suppose your car's one conscientious owner saw the murascription as I did?

Hoped someone else might challenge Z on this; seems like a gross generalization. The 400k+ W211s that regularly take me to the airport can't all be on their 5th turbo, can they?

Hoped someone else might challenge Z on this; seems like a gross generalization. The 400k+ W211s that regularly take me to the airport can't all be on their 5th turbo, can they? Or even their 4th Turbo. I bet none of them got their on their original turbo. The turbo as now employed by car makers is inherently unreliable, by its very nature. You cant make anything reliable that relies on being driven by corrosive exhaust gas at 950c, cooled by a piddling tiny amount of engine oil feed and at a price and size that makes it affordable and suitable for cars* The very healthy and lucrative aftermarket in turbo reconditioning stands testament to that. *You might stand a chance if you didnt have to make it variable geometry.

Not if the fourth expired at 400k, as your rule would have it. I'll ask next time I'm in one; most of the drivers like talking about how reliable their Es are, and refer to my 80,000-miler as a ''baby'.

Which one? It has two - I think. Half the load on each, so should last 200,000, eh? 😊

Ask GordonBennett from the HJ site. He will know.
Does seem odd that i have been in many taxis all with 200,000 miles plus on them and all seems to drive very well. The thing that kills cars is lots of cold starts and short journeys. Maybe Avant can invite him over...

The 220 CDI engine is essentially the same as the one in that Sprinter van in your mirror. Can't imagine many of them get treated to a new turbo every 100,000 miles.

Hey!, this thread exists because a: someone is having turbo issues and b: you said you got rid of a car because of turbo issues.
Now Its a bit rich shooting the messenger when its your message!

I got rid of one car at 140,000 miles, whose turbo was irksome but far from terminal. It's just that the First Mrs WDB would never do the exercising routine that kept it happy, so the one who got the limp mode consequences was always me. If it had been my daily drive at the end, it might have lasted another year or two.
Anyway, one case proves nothing, and even a second doesn't prove your assertion that turbos are good for 100,000 miles and no more. And Vić's LEC has a different engine from mine, and is of an earlier generation.
With those reservations, I agree with every word you wrote. 😌
