Still think you've been had. Fixing the suspension really isn't difficult or time consuming.
Airspring work picnic, as they say in Germany. 🇩🇪

>wish I'd kept the old one........... Bloody told you. Good job he ignored you. The clue is that there few of them left running around, because few can afford to keep them running. It was never a reliable car.

Ah piss off. He should have kept it, and that's all there is to it.
Though I forgive you, because "Airspring work picnic" really did make me smile.

Though a thought does occur....
Al,
Your most recent car, the wonky Merc, has been less than a splendid purchase. Its fair to point out that the Saab wasn't idea either (though I'd have kept it). What vehicle did the Saab replace and how did that one expire? Was it at least a good buy?

Sorry to hear of your holiday woes Al. I left the Vendee on the 9th and vaguely recall seeing a listing barge going the other way near La Roche....?!
Weather was stunning for 5 of the 7 days that I was there... but you probably don't want to hear that!

What vehicle did the Saab replace and how did that one expire? Was it at least a good buy? Well the SAAB replaced an 02 reg Golf TDi, as the school run/commute car, because the Golf's boot wasn't big enough to carry all children's bags and sporting gear, and the wife's Brompton, which I had to transport along with her to the station every morning. The Golf was pretty solid and reliable, but wasn't big enough. I already had the Mazda 6 estate at the time also, which is of course big enough, but at about 25mpg it's an expensive car to fuel for 12000 miles a year. The Mazda had replaced the Renault Laguna of infamous unreliability. Mazda has been a good buy, but lack of economy is the drawback. SAAB only cost £1500 to buy and ran for 2 years without too much expense, so wasn't a total disaster. The Merc will now be kept long term, but of course there will be maintenance every now and again.

I arrived in Vendee from the north via Rennes, Nantes and Challans, arriving at St Jean de Monts early afternoon on the 9th. That's not enormously close to La Roche, but nor is it a million miles. The car is light blue, and we had 4 bikes on the roof. What were you driving? I usually notice all the UK reg cars going the other way. Assuming you were in a UK car of course.

Glad to hear you've got it sorted Al. Better I think to keep a car that you like fettled, than to buy one that you don't really enjoy, because it's likely to be cheaper. What's that old thing about quality being remembered long after price is forgotten...? You can always earn more money to replace the stuff that's spent, but experiences form memories.

Sounds like you now have a car that is mostly fixed, hasn't actually let you down, is quick and economical. Unless something goes 'bang' in a big way sounds like a keeper.

...experiences form memories. Like almost being decapitated by a falling Renault tailgate?

If I were Al, I think I would definitely go for the Leaf. The man maths is close enough, but the clincher for me would be the likelihood and expectation of fewer maintenance and repair bills over the next few years. You probably* will be better off and can enjoy the peace of mind. And a shiny new motor!
But here's the rub: I'd flog the dodgy old Merc and keep the Mazda! The Merc will quite possibly be a money pit in the near future at that age. I would take my chances with the thirstier Mazda!

I should think that one will be down to Mrs A. If he goes for the Leaf, he's going to commute in it, leaving her the other one. There must be quite a strong case for flogging both Mercedes and Mazda and getting somnething cheaper to run, of whatever size Mrs A needs. Petrol Skoda Fabia perhaps, which can be a hatch or an estate.
