I keep looking at Superbs and asking myself "could I?"
Not sure. It's not the badge, really and honestly it's not the badge, it's more the look of the thing, I just can't quite like it. I'm sure they're excellent, it's just, oh I don't know, you just don't bother chatting up the ugly one if there's a pretty one available do you? Shallow as that might be.

Espada - most cars now have the dreaded start/atop which you have to disengage every time - some EU rule made by men in suits says you can't have 'off' as a default.
If I wanted a car that size I'd be very tempted by a Superb, but the petrol 2.0 with 278 bhp rather than the diesel. But I'd be even more tempted to go - as you have - for something with six cylinders. The Superb estate looks a lot better than the hatch.

Meh, the bonnet looks snub to me.
Still, even if it isn't actually ugly, it definitely isn't the best one in the room. Kind of like going home with the wrong Spice Girl.

I think that particular one would be a poor choice, with its over-aggressive wheels and its interior that is both gloomy and hard to keep clean. But it's a handsome car, to my eye at least.
The shortish bonnet must be part of the reason there's so much space inside - compared, say, with the similarly-sized BMW 5 Touring, which needs a bonnet big enough to cover the M5 engine, even if most come with a 2.0.

....... which needs a bonnet big enough to cover the M5 engine, even if most come with a 2.0. ...probably more to do with the transverse vs longitudinal mounting of the engine ......

In terms of practicality, the diesel 190ps version of that one would do everything I need it to and would almost certainly be a nice thing to do it in. But, and I know we looking at it from different perspectives, but one of those works out at about £2 a day cheaper in bik than my E Class. Not really worth it to me to have the one l'm not quite sure of to save £2 a day. And its FWD. Bleh ! And its DSG. Double bleh !

Of course that's right from your present point of view. You're a director of your company - you work hard to make sure it prospers - and it prospers well enough to provide you with a Mercedes. Most of us would go with a premium brand in that situation. But if you were freelance you'd probably be looking at a Superb or a Mondeo. Skoda's achievement is to offer something so close to the premium brands for a lot less money Ford has done this for some time (most of us remember valiant old Betsy....) although I'm not sure that Fords are as good value as they used to be new. Secondhand, yes, as they drop value like a stone as soon as they leave the showroom.

Oh absolutely right. Own money is a different thing. I'd struggle to look past a Mondeo in that instance. Never had a bad one.

Time for a general rambling update then. None of the big ticket potential faults have gone pop yet. TC, turbo, suspension spring. All as you were. We are still a little Fray Bentos at the rear. Was losing a small amount of coolant though, so popped it down to the indie who had replaced the thermostat at some stage last year. They found a small leak on the thermostat housing, and on closer inspection found a poor quality rubber gasket had been used. I remember having them doing the thermostat, but neither of us can find the receipt/record. They wouldn't have used a bad part knowingly, perhaps they just got a bad one delivered and didn't check it properly, but either way I offered to pay for their time to fix it as I can't prove they did the job, and they have so far failed to invoice me. Have had to shell out 75 notes on insurance excess for a new windscreen though - I picked up a stone chip in the black area right at the edge and didn't notice it until a crack appeared. Bugger. Oh well, that's what insurance is for but I'd still rather spend the £75 on wine and kebabs. Also received a NIP from Gwent Police this week for 48 in a variable limited 40 section of the M4. Permission to say cock, Sir? I am hoping for an invitation to one of their fragrant speeding courses now, as a fine would be under the new scheme of half a week's income. Which, even though I don't earn a shed load of money, is significantly more than the previous £60. Will have to shell out for the course if I'm lucky though, think that's about £100. So £175 out of the summer holiday fund. Sigh. Such is life, and motoring. Local indie does a small amount of car sales, and I was nearly tempted to rummage behind the sofa cushions and go for this: www.jgriffiths.co.uk/used-cars/mercedes-benz-c-class-2-1-c220-cdi-blueefficiency-elegance-5dr-reading-201703062970718But I think I'll wait until at least next year and get a newer (09/10 or so) E Class if I decide to change rather than fix up the existing one.

Car is holding up well then - that's good news. The NIP not so good.
That's one reason I'm considering as an option on the next car traffic sign recognition so I don't miss a new limit. I got caught out speed wise when coming through one of the Mersey tunnels last year... honestly missed the sign(s) when it dropped to 40mph because I was looking at some sort of police operation in the tunnel. Then there was the copper with the speed gun as I came out of the tunnel onto the A59. I did note my error and slow down but he could have got me - but I think he was more interested in the BMW speeding down the A59 :-) They pulled him in.
Only problem with the £85 option is it relies on you having all electric front seats (why?) which cost a fair bit (£550). Driver seat would be electric on this car but you need the passenger seat as electric too.

Huh? What's the electric seat stuff about?
I'm surprised at the NIP, I don't remember failing to slow in time for any overhead gantries and don't recall any flashes. Although that's not good either as it implies I wasn't paying enough attention, seeing as I got the NIP. A wake up call, bang to rights, all that yes, but still grates to get done for doing 48 on a flowing motorway.
