Following that, my money is on Kurt..... Mine's on Cnut........ You are all nearly as cruel as the Germans were about Oberlieutenant Humph Gruber and his little tank

MOT day. Just got a text message from the garage saying it's passed. Off to collect, wonder if there are any advisories? Actually, I know there will be one - I've got a crack in the windscreen, lower right edge, from a blasted stone chip last autumn. The stone hit the far edge of the windscreen, over the black edge bit, so I couldn't see the chip until the crack started. It's about 2 inches now, so not encroaching on the MOT sensitive area of the screen, but will grow no doubt and we'll need a new screen. Bah.
Also, the lean is still there you'll all be delighted to know, but it hasn't got any worse so I'll carry on regardless until such time as something more serious develops. The torque converter dos seem to be getting fractionally worse, but it' not a huge deal. Maybe it'll last another year, maybe more. I'd replace it now if I had the readies, maybe will do it in a couple of months before summer hols if I can save a few quid. When that fails totally though I'll probably get it fixed rather than going on a car shopping whirlwind as is my usual wont. The car is just so "right" overall that it'd be hard to replace now.
Yours, Fray Bentos

No advisories. Not even the windscreen. MOT tester has just got himself a new (old) car, which I was very impressed with. AMG E55 estate, Y reg. Silver, but hey ho. Said it cost him £9k which is a bit tasty, but it is rust free, 79k miles and full MBSH. Awesome motor. I'd prefer a straight E500 myself, but still, wotamotor. Had a good long chat with him about it, and the boss's track race prepped MkII Golf, which is a beautiful light royal blue colour and sounds awesome. Always pays to nurture friendly relations with one's local indie, and these guys are proper car people.

Yours is indeed the sort of car you could more or less keep forever, if you're prepared to keep it properly maintained anyway. Always providing it doesn't get legislated into oblivion that is.
Depends which way you're inclined I suppose...😎

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found...
I used 'Vote just as their leaders tell 'em to' on my sell-out Remainer Tory MP at the end of a tetchy exchange of emails the day of the vote on the Lords' amendments. That was the point at which he swapped his glib 'the decision has been made' answers for an automated reply. Haven't heard from him since.

What are the signs of a failing torque converter? The E350 has a slight sort of 'catch' when the car is cold as if the gear change doesn't quite catch the next gear on a change up and the revs rise before settling down. It only happens once and other every day...

What are the signs of a failing torque converter? Unconverted torque, I suppose. Not sure where you'd look for it: footwells, ashtrays, on the drive after you've moved off? Have a look, but be careful, and don't touch it in case it twists your arm off.

Probably a big tank of it somewhere, at the back, under the boot on one side.

Yeah, that's the trouble with those old tech 6 cylinder jobs, bit iffy on the old reliability front I've heard...😉

It only happens once and other every day... It's not gear changes with mine. When it's cold it doesn't rev quite smoothly if at constant speeds - the rev needle fluctuates a teeny bit and you can feel the car "juddering" a bit, for want of a better word. As if the TC isn't quite "grabbing" the output from the engine and converting it smoothly to the transmission. Once up to operating temperature it's not so noticeable, but it's still perceptible to me, but only at constant speeds below about 35mph. Once I boot it, it smooths out and at higher cruising speeds it's not noticeable.
Hard to describe, and excuse any terminology which isn't quite accurate, I'm no engineer. My local Merc indie has driven the car and surmised it's a failing TC, so I'm inclined to believe it.

Hmmmm. Mine isn't anywhere near that bad. I'll live with it; besides the six cylinder smoothness is worth the occasional hiccup.
I drove a top of the line Superb on Sunday. 2.0Tdi with DSG. Sorry, but way too clumsy compared to mine. Hate the stop start, a constant diesel thrum that's not pleasant and well....... Ughh. Not for me.
