Maybe it’s a pull-out awning like some caravans have?! And you sleep in the back of the car 😂

Ah ha. Also just spotted that it has a boot lip guard installed. So I guess this was owned by a plumber or similar, but a very fastidious and not very busy one, going by the mileage and overall condition of the car.

So here's my latest plan. Don't buy a car for the lad. Sell the Civic, buy a cheap replacement using my equity, make it a manual he can practice in, but large enough to do my (occasional, very occasional and limited) long distance and load carrying duties also. When he's passed his test, insure him named driver on the Leaf, and he can then drive himself and his sister to school in that on cheap(ish, given current circs) electricity. Yes the insurance hike will be noticeable, but it will be less than the cost of running a seperate car for him and filling it with petrol. At this time, reasses whether the cheap car I've bought is a keeper, or whether I want to swap it for an auto for example. Then, once we know what University he is going to in August '23 (if any...), take a decision on whether that merits a car for him or whether it's either unnecessary due to limited distance or unworkable due to University restrictions. In this scenario, something like this tempts... www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107285562731

Aye, that or something similar might work. Think I've almost certainly mentioned before that I learned on my dad's Volvo 240. If you don't especially tell him it's quite a big car he won't worry about it and will just get on with it. Chris Rea learned on an ice cream van y'know. 😉

Yes he's not worried about big cars, he wants a mid sized saloon himself. Does not like small hatchbacks.
Still have a slight reservation about having 2 cars and 3 drivers, but of course any issues that might cause are really marginal cases.

We still have three here, but in truth, the occasions when all three are in use at the same time are pretty rare. It does happen, but not really enough to justify having them all. But, while its affordable, it is just ever so slightly more convenient I suppose. Hate it when someone moves my seat though, not a problem on the Merc with its memory seats but the others...grrrrr

Of course, for the next year, I've got a bonus Mini sitting in the garage doing nothing. I am a named driver on the insurance.

Which would handily enough provide "emergency" cover I guess.

Yes, but only for the period when "he" is learning, so there would never be a need for 3 cars in that time. Well, depends if he passes before next September I suppose, which I hope he does, but it won't be long before it.

Discussed ad nauseam of course, I like autos, and on balance would always choose one over a manual, but, to be honest, on the occasions when I drive one of the manuals, it doesn't irritate me enough to worry about it. Why not get a manual estate somethingorother, then you've got a learner car and a long trip load lugger in one.

Who is your son going to do most of his practice driving with Al, you or driving instructor ? Do you want a manual larger car or would you be looking for an auto again quite soon ?
If the answer to the first question is driving instructor then is it even worth looking for a manual for yourself if you are going to move on to an auto relatively quickly. Maybe it would it be cheaper to pay for a few more lessons ? Or use the time in your auto to focus more on positioning and everything else that is going on and leave the instructor to polish the manual side of things ?
Not saying you shouldn't get rid of the Civic as it sounds as though that decision has already been made.
