No, no decison made at all yet.
We'll be using an instructor once a week I imagine, but I want him to drive every day to school and back whilst learning under my supervision. We drive there anyway, so it'd be a wasted opportunity if he wasn't driving, and I think it's best to do it all in a manual.
Humph - yes, manual estate car, or large hatch like the Mazda 6 I posted would be fine for my dog/loads etc. Which can then be traded back for an auto once we don't need manual any more, if I can be bothered.

Everyone's experience will be different of course, but in my case, and indeed with my son, we both had a half dozen lessons with a driving instructor to get started, and then after that I just learned in my dad's car. Similarly, my son had three two hour sessions with a driving instructor to get the basics sorted, and then once he'd done that, he reverted to just being with one of us in the Aygo.
Thought it was safer to have the earliest lessons in a dual control car with a proper instructor, but after he'd got the raw gist of it, it was fine to use our own car.

Yes maybe that's where we will go with it. Depends on how proficient he turns out to be,and how much he's willing to listen to Dad and not argue, I suppose, but judging from him beating me at go-karting recently he hasn't got much fear. Which may or may not be a good thing...

Well, we made a pact before we started the process, which was along the the lines of "if I say to do something, just do it, trust me, don't argue, just do it, and if you want to question it, we'll talk about it when we next stop" More or less worked for both of us.

Good Lord. The WBAC valuation for the Civic has gone up to £11,500. That's almost £4k in equity now.

I haven't looked, but given that the Civic has ticked most of your usage and reliability boxes, is there any future in looking for a cheaper manual version of the same model to complete your latest cunning plan?

Good Lord. The WBAC valuation for the Civic has gone up to £11,500. Prompted me to look. Last time — in May, when I was considering the 630i GT — the CLS was about £10,500. Today it’s £13,200.

Re above - for example, there's a 2016 one in blue in Swindon. Diesel manual 38,000 miles, £10595... Too old to get on a PCP, so too expensive to be a money saving alternative. To finance that, I'd need a loan for the full amount, which would be the same or more than my current PCP, so a non-starter really.

Given that it's tight git spec, ( no sunroof and no tinted windows ) and non-ULEZ you should probs bite their hands off... 😜

Given that it's tight git spec, ( no sunroof and no tinted windows ) Full motor and memory kit, all-round heated seats... I'll take those, and windows I can see out of, over a hole in the roof Don't really about the ULEZ, given that it's been in precisely once and I'm unlikely to need any more sideboards from there. And what do you suppose has happened to Approved Used 630i prices? £24,000 for the three-year-old one I drove; this one has a slightly higher spec but is £30,000. Nice car, though - and it's escaped the blight of 'privacy glass'. usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202105142628702?quoteref=85daa97c-6653-45dd-8f8f-5db9446dfd5f

Ah well, y'see now, I'd rather have an engine that gives me more than 50mpg while still being theoretically capable of pushing the car along at double the speed limit, and it has heated memory seats too. The panoramic roof allows me to regularly commune with nature, while keeping the tan topped up, and the privacy glass is easy to see out of, but prevents the hoi polloi and the paparazzi from looking in. You know how it is.
Anyway, I'm sure not all that many people will know you've only got the basic model. Just those who are y'know, interested in cars and so on...

Nice as that Beemer is WdB, if I had a nice Merc like yours that I hardly use then I couldn’t stomach paying over £25k to switch! How much “better” is the BM going to be?

£17k at these prices. To change to a car with five years’ more life in it. £3,400 a year — hardly crazy money, next to what some people pay through PCPs for newer but much less grand machinery. (It would mean the CLS had cost me less than £9,000 in depreciation over four years, which is impressive, given that it cost its previous owner more like £30,000 in the first four.)
I’m not going to do it because we’re past the point in family life now where the GT offers anything significant over the CLS. Family holidays, if they happen at all, will be more fragmented affairs involving shorter stays and more than one car. There’ll be three more years of campus runs and that’ll be it.
To the extent that the diesel CLS is dirtier than the petrol GT, it’s in its local emissions in urban areas, something it very seldom does. On CO2, which is a problem wherever you drive, they’re much of a muchness, so the environmentally sound change is to an EV such as the Enyaq.
I’ll still want something capable of comfortable long-distance touring, but the Enyaq could do that. For now, the CLS does a good job — and is paid for.
