You know that's not a bad idea. Funnily enough I thought about that a few months back, but it slipped my mind. Hmm. Of course, I also then thought of the possibility of scope creep, putting £20k on the mortgage and getting a nearly new Superb. If it's manageable, just do it. Only live once and so on. Best to try to enjoy some of it.

Incidentally, re school fees. My son is the first of our male line not to have been educated at the same well known Scottish private school for as far back as family records show. He went to the local comp. Mainly due to our location, but also because I couldn't have been sure of affording it every year, and indeed being a bit of a lefty too. He's also had to spend about half of his course time in the spare room due initially to lecturers being on strike early 2020 followed by Covid. Despite all that, he's only gone and got a double first. Must be genetic I suppose eh? 😉 Congratulations to the lad, great achievement. I've probably said I was dead set against private education, for the same reasons as you, and particularly as we have two and if you do it for one, then you have to do it for both, unless there's a really, really good reason. Laddo here recently got his GCSE results, obviously Covid and weird grading is a thing right now, but he's aced them. I can't help thinking though that he'd have aced them at the local comprehensive.

Well, of course I'm very proud of his achievements. Bit of a wonky subject mix though, he did a dual degree in Music and Psychology, so what the heck he does with that I'm not sure. The uni want him to come back and do his masters in Psychology, but he wants to be a pop star...
In any event, he's got what he's got and he'll have to find some method of funding the student debt.

I'm trying to talk my lad out of applying to do medicine. That is the path to a very stressful life. Mind you, he is significantly more laid back than me.

Not that it's a bad car, very nice indeed I should think, but, given all you've said, wouldn't it just be better to keep what you've got, and borrow enough on your mortgage to keep going with those and also fund a learner banger? £5000 should cover it all and more.
After the school fees stop, it wouldn't take long to pay back.

Which is certainly not a stupid idea. Makes a lot more sense than a dodgy Volvo....
Even if you were to simply borrow a few more quid to remain as the status quo I understand the issue of legroom for the lad. So a change is more 'needed' than we thought. Fair enough.
I went to a private school - The Manchester Grammar School - which I hated but is now meant to be better at pastoral care. I got a good rounded education and better than I could have got in the state sector in the 1970s and 80s, but now I am less convinced and I could not afford to send three children to proviate school, so none did. They are all doing or have done fine.
Congrats to Humph's son... He should do the Masters - pop star stuff is fine, but like professional footballers, only about 0.1% of the talented make any serious money out of it.
Think I said that our son #1 got a First and is now in London working for the Valuation Office Agency - seems ot be settling on nicely. Son #2 got a First in his second year at Uni doing Civil and Architectural Engineering and Daughter got decent GCSEs' - good enough to do Geography, Chemistry, Biology at A-level. So we are chuffed.

Congratulations to Humphling. Music and Psychology will serve him well in whatever field he chooses. They both require analytical ability and a certain amount of human feeling too — the ‘STEMpathy’ combination that will define the few people still necessary when artificial intelligence can do everything else. I’ve known a lot of music graduates in technical and managerial roles in the IT business for a start. (Including one of my very best friends, who has earned a great deal more in her career than I have in mine, none of it from actual music.) A musical mind can apply itself to a lot of different tasks. Good luck to him!

I am a financial product numpty. If I ask for more money on my mortgage, do they ask "what for", and is "car" an acceptable answer?

Good luck to him! Thanks WDB ( and indeed everyone else who has passed on their best wishes ) he's been a bit grounded these past couple of weeks. He went to the Reading festival with his gf and came back with Covid. He's better now, but it floored him for a while. He needs to decide what happens next very soon now though. He's already got a few good working relationships with some pretty well known music artists, writing songs and music for some and so on, so there is more than a fantasy going on here, and that is his passion. But, I agree, he should probably do the masters anyway if he can. Told him Reading was a dodgy place. 😉

If he's into music, I'm surprised he went to Reading Festival. It ceased to contain any several years ago.
Sorry to hear he was ill, it really is a nasty business this virus.
Oh, by the way, Shed Seven are looking for a drummer and guitarist/keyboard for their upcoming tour if he's after a contract assignment with some proper musicians.

Why ? Who's the support band ? (you knew someone was going to say it) Band n. A group of musicians sometimes with a drummer. Always used to wind our drummer up with that.
